· Pioneer N-50A, connected via a Netgear extender and ethernet cable. to a mesh network

Describe the issue

Roon has stopped playing any audio file. I can select tracks from the library, but Roon does not play them.

Describe your network setup

Roon server is on my MacBook Air. This connects to the Synology NAS server via a Deco Mesh. Music is usually played through a Pioneer N-50A Media Player which connects to the network via a Netgear extender and ethernet cable. This has worked perfectly well for the past year. It stopped playing anything (including internet radio) 2 days ago.

What troubleshooting steps have you tried?

I recommend powering off all affected equipment, Networking Devices, Roon Server Machine, Audio Devices).

If that doesn’t help, could you expand on “stopping playing audio files” what do you see when attempting to play.

Hi @Roger_Smith2,
Thanks for reaching out to us about this issue. Can you say a little more about what you see when Roon doesn’t play a track? Are there any error messages?

There are no error messages.

I can select an album, or online radio station that I wish to listen to. It loads. I click on the ‘Play Now’ button and absolutely nothing happens.

At the bottom of the screen where the current track is displayed I can click on the arrow to play that track and again, nothing happens.

I can select the same album via synology audio station and play it perfectly using exactly the same setup

Hi Carl,

thanks for your response. Before posting my query, I did exactly as you said. Every link in the chain was powered off and rebooted. The Deco Mesh needed new firmware, so that was downloaded and installed.

There are no error messages.

Hi @Roger_Smith2,

Thanks for the additional information. As a next step, lets set up a fresh instance of Roon on your MacBook and see if your issue persists. Steps to follow are below:

  • Make a Backup of your current RoonServer Database
  • Exit out of RoonServer
  • Navigate to your RoonServer’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RoonServer”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old”
  • Reinstall the RoonServer App from our Downloads Page to generate a new RoonServer folder
  • On the Roon Remotes, press “Use another Roon Server” and connect to the new database

We’ll be on standby for your results :raised_hands:

Good evening Benjamin,

I kicked off the backup process about 9 hours ago, and it is still running. My music library contains approximately 3,300 albums and 65,000 files. Should it take this long to do the backup?

Roger

Hey @Roger_Smith2,

No, it definitely shouldn’t take that long.

Based on your account / Roon Server information from our servers, we’re reporting closer to 100k tracks tied to your Macbook Air. How are the RAM and storage settings looking on the machine?

Does most of your library live on the NAS?

Do you have a recently saved backup that you could use instead of attempting to create a fresh backup? If so, proceed with the above steps and let me know how things run. If not, lets focus on getting a clean backup before anything else.

Where are you attempting to save the backup? Are you able to attempt to create a copy local to the Mac?

In the meantime, try to simplify your network setup - remove any extenders and see about getting a direct connection from your Mac to your primary router, as well as to the NAS if possible.

We’ll be on standby for your results :+1:

Good evening Benjamin,

You are correct…. I underestimated the size of my library… it consists of 6700 albums (Heaven knows when I will get to listen to them all!), and 104,000 files.

My Macbook has 8Gb RAM and 356 Gb free storage.

My entire music library sits on my Synology NAS.

I have no backups. I was attempting to save the backup to Microsoft’s OneDrive.

After receiving your last message I attemped to back a backup on my Macbook. However, when I try to do this, in settings, the Backup Status is ‘…Cancelling…” and it has been doing this for hours. It shows a file location on OneDrive.

Thanks for the additional info @Roger_Smith2!

We were able to pull a fresh diagnostic, and saw traces of TimeMachine potentially overlapping with Roon. Do you have TimeMachine active on the Macbook air running Roon Server?

It’s best to keep the two separate, as there are known issues between programs, especially if they’re running at the same time.

If you reply on TimeMachine, I would set the application to ignore all folders and locations associated with Roon, and also make sure that your Roon backups don’t touch anything in relation to TimeMachine. :+1:

Here’s more info on this:

Good evening Benjamin,

As you suggested, I removed the Roon App from the TimeMachine Backup, and all is well. Roon is working as it should (although I haven’t tried it using my Pioneer N50A as the output.)

I have just completed a database backup, which took around 1 minute.

I will post again if anything untowards happens, but at the moment all looks good.

Many thanks for your time,

Roger
