Roon inability to play HLS .m4s and FLAC EOS/BOS Live Radio streams (ref#PB4JXD) [Ticket in]

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· Roon can't play HLS .m4s and FLAC EOS/BOS Live Radio streams

Tell us about your home network

· Freebox Server wired to NUC ROCK

I am reopening the attention on several long lasting issues of Roon’s Live Radio playing engine.

HLS has now become a very popular protocol for Internet Radios. Unfortunately, Roon can’t play so called HLS “.m4s” chuncks. This is prevent interesting stations to be added such as the FLAC/HD version of SomaFM Groove Salad, and others.

Another old bug is that Roon stops playing FLAC streams using so called “EOS/BOS” flags, several examples are listed in this thread.

There are other issues reported by our Live Radio overlord @BrianW in this thread at least (incl. inconsistent behaviour between Roon and the tester of the Live Radio management app).

Maybe it’s time for our Live Radio engine to get a refresh

Hello @alec_eiffel

Thank you for reaching Roon support.

Thanks for the feedback here. Since this is not a current feature of Roon, I would recommend also posting your suggestion in the Feature Suggestions section of the site.

Our product team and developers keep a close eye on that category, so that’s definitely the best place to propose a change like this and get feedback from the Community.

Strongly disagrees, FLAC radio streaming was introduced 8 years ago in Roon as a full feature see Roon 1.5 Is Now Live!

The issues I reported above (HLS .m4s, EOS/BOS…) have been ignored for years and prevent FLAC streaming on a number of streams. All the other audio players VLC, LMS, my browser, hardware streamers can play these but not Roon. Let’s not consider it a “feature request” but a necessary update of Roon’s Live Radio engine.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Live radio seems to be stuck in Roon’s backwater and hasn’t received updates addressing issues for a long time.

@connor another one down Some FLAC streams removed - #114 by BrianW

I fully agrre with the m4s fix. I also posted a feature request a while ago.

Hello @alec_eiffel,

I completely understand your point.

I want to let you know that I have created an internal ticket and escalated this directly to our Product team for a thorough review of the Live Radio engine’s current capabilities regarding .m4s chunks and EOS/BOS flags.

Why we ask for Feature Suggestions: The reason I initially recommended posting this in the Feature Suggestions category (or voting on an existing thread about it) is because it is the most effective way to influence our development roadmap. When our Product team sees a high volume of community votes and engagement on a specific technical limitation, it helps them understand the immediate demand and prioritize the necessary engine updates or fixes much faster.

Thank you again for advocating for the Live Radio experience and holding us to a high standard. We have passed all your feedback and the stream examples directly to the team.

Please let us know if you have any other questions!

Thanks a lot Vadim! Beyond HLS .m4s, there’s an overall issue of Roon dealing with HLS streams properly. HLS is on the way to be the new standard for web audio streaming and Roon struggles with it, another station had to be removed today RTL best 102,5 - #5 by Ernst_Ellensohn

@BrianW has probably more examples and details in mind.

Looking forward to restored Live Radio capabilities!

I could, and today I’ll add another one: Roxy Radio has now started including metadata via EOS/BOS flags and thus its flac stream has been removed

Hey @alec_eiffel

Thanks for performing that test, we have added this info to the investigation ticket. The ticket has been submitted for developer review, meaning that this may take some time to be reviewed.

There aren’t any additional details needed at this time, so we will go ahead and close the thread for the time being, and if any other questions arise after the developers have reviewed the case, we will re-open the thread and reach out once more.

Thanks again for your report, and thank you in advance for your patience as the ticket progresses through the development queue for review.
