This topic keeps reappearing in all sorts of places - the dreaded Windoze vs Linux.
There are all sorts of insults flying around - computer geeks, techies, etc…
Roon runs best on Roon Nucleus which runs on Linux….so says Roon!
If you want to explore and get all the excellence…then Roon saysGet Roon Rock on a Linux server.
If you are knowledgeable then build your own Linux Server and install Roon yourself.
ROON runs on LINUX - pure and simple…
But there are all those victims out there who think that MS is the answer to a maiden’s player…oh dear!
Sadly Roon pitches its offering at them and panders to their misled perception of computer technology.
So Linux users…
can’t get proper networking - see the issues round WOL…and ARC…and…
don’t get a Linux Roon Remote app
can’t change or add DSP filters on Linux (or on Android, iOS etc)
So isn’t it time for Roon to change the focus ?
…Roon on Linuxfirst - ALL of it…servers, networking, remotes, filters…
…all new development on Linux
…Literature and Guides focussing on Linux
…and follow up with the bodged Windoze versions later…
I do not know which Code Development System Roon uses…
…but I do know that the very best code development environments run on Linux - and they all can produce code for Windoze if needed.
… and I know that no one in their right mind would develop modern digital audio systems using Windoze - so why should Roon ?
So this is a plea…
…first for the FULL Roon Packages for Linux.
…and then for a structured move to Linux for the future.
…and now for the tsunami of excuses, ridicule, evasion, and obfuscation…
Because focusing on 3% of the worldwide computer users is the path to success. People who know how to install and configure Linux (and I do) forget too easily how alien it can be to non techies. I recommend that you try working in commercial software support for a bit
I think you are severely overestimating abilities. Our company produces software for educated people in the global leading business consultancies, banks, etc., who are smart people in general but nevertheless challenged by many basic concepts in the OSes they have used for decades
I have and use three Roon cores including Nucleus, Mac Mini, and Windows laptop. They all work well and have their place.
I don’t know, but I suspect a relatively high percentage of Roon customers start with their Roon core on Windows. That’s how I started and still use Windows away from home.
I though it was Loosix… Isn’t it some toy red-eyed penguin-humpers use?

Evidently, this thread is the antithesis of “time to get serious and change”. Except for a few replies, it appears that a rational argument is lost on everyone else. If this doesn’t change, I shall close down the thread.
I mostly agree with Marian. Even just the title is inflammatory - for all we know, there are people here who work for Microsoft. Those folks don’t need come here and see their company’s product ridiculed as “Windoze”. For all you know, I might work at Microsoft. As a community, we don’t tend to make a habit of name calling products and companies. I prefer it that way - makes it easier to listen to what people are saying.
And, obviously, it’s a bit Swiftian to propose that Roon drop MacOS and Windows to focus on Linux.
But I do think the poster has a reasonable case to make for a Linux client. That’s really just the thing he’s saying, right?
One could certainly make the case for a desktop client on Linux (which one?) as well, once it actually works well enough for, uh, 99.5% of current and potential customers. Maybe in 5 years or so? And while we’re at it, why not a MiNT cliuent as well? And one for NextStep. At least that one looked pretty.
The usage share of operating systems varies depending on the source of the data and the specific time period being considered. However, some commonly cited sources of operating system usage share data include:
NetMarketShare: According to NetMarketShare’s most recent data as of September 2021, the usage share of desktop/laptop operating systems is as follows: Windows - 76.73%, macOS - 16.23%, Linux - 1.84%, Chrome OS - 0.98%.
StatCounter: According to StatCounter’s most recent data as of September 2021, the usage share of desktop/laptop operating systems is as follows: Windows - 73.58%, macOS - 17.57%, Linux - 1.64%, Chrome OS - 1.45%.
It’s important to note that these figures only represent desktop/laptop operating system usage share and do not include mobile operating systems like Android and iOS. Additionally, different sources may use different methodologies to collect usage data, which can result in slight variations in the reported usage share figures.
My first time using ChatGPT… achievement unlocked.
Congratulations! Note that all statistics concerning desktop usage are heavily influenced by corporate policies, many large corporations implementing Microsoft Windows desktops throughout their organization. Each use case is going to have a different profile wrt desktop usage.
Roon users are, in my view, much more heavily leaning toward the hobbyist, audio nerd, home automation, and tinkerer. These types of users are, again in my speculative view, much more likely to use Linux on a desktop computer. So, I think the percentage of Linux desktops in the Roon user community will be much higher than in the general population. And the percentage in the general population would be much higher if we excluded corporate use.
My 2 cents. I’m a Linux user and wish Roon had a Linux client. That’s pretty much why I wrote RoonCommandLine.
