Roon is not really quitting on a Macbook Pro

When quitting Roon in the middle of a song or radio track, the app does quit but the sound keeps coming out of the speakers. No Roon app visible in the open app page so why is that? You would expect it to stop playing… When opening Roon again you can stop the music but there’s no other way without Roon open. Strange.

Roon Server is a separate program that runs in the background (without a window). All playback is done by Roon Server, the visible Roon GUI app is just for control. I.e., stop the playback before you close the GUI.

The separation into GUI and Server has been the standard installation type for more than a year or so.

(This is exactly the same when you run Roon Server on a machine that’s separate from the control apps, like when you use the app on a mobile device to control the Roon Server on your main machine. It’s just that the same thing is now the case if everything runs on a single machine, as well)

Roon is a client server app.

The app you are running just controls the music.

The server - and the software that plays music are separate.

So quitting the control app doesn’t stop the music.

When you run it on a single machine it may seem strange - but it is right.

Ok, thx to both repliers. I understand now but still I would think that a quit command should also reach the server and stop the play function. Not a very difficult thing to implement I think. But, no problem, I thought something was wrong here, but there isn’t. Thanks again. Solved.

It might not be difficult to implement (although it might not be as simple as you think when you take into account the myriad different use-cases that can be applied to Roon) but is it really what you want?

I for one, do not want this behavior. The current behavior is what I want and what I expect.

I certainly don’t want the music to quit when I quit any of my Roon client apps.

Yes, you and Dr Tone are absolutely right. I’m quite new to Roon, but now totally understand the clever idea behind it. I was kind of assuming a standard app, but Roon is not, thankfully.
