Roon is stopping play too often

Core Machine (Operating system/System info/Roon build number)
Antipodes Dxe latest roon build 1.6 (416) 64 bit

Network Details (Including networking gear model/manufacturer and if on WiFi/Ethernet)
Virgin Superb 2 > Aqvox network switch > then ethernet to core machine > ethernet to Roon end point - NUC i7 running Audiolinux

Audio Devices (Specify what device you’re using and its connection type - USB/HDMI/etc.)
USB >Uptone ISO Regen > USB cable > to Sonore Ultra Digital > I2S output > PS Audio Junior DAC

Description Of Issue
This has just started happening very regularly, say the last few weeks. Music plays fine then randomly stops, could be 10 mins or 1/2 hour. Then I either I press play to start again immediately or core disappears and after some network seeking I can see the core machine again.

Here is code when a stop occurs from roon server log at approx 00.22 mins London time
This happens with streaming either redbook or MQA…

Hi @Patrick_Bryson,

Does this occur for all endpoints? If you play to System Output of a remote do you experience similar stops?

Does this occur for all content, both local and TIDAL/Qobuz?

I tried with just straight USB to DAC and same thing happens, so not dependent on end point, I am streaming from Tidal only.

The Roon log clearly states network error/connection to Tidal then after a minute it reconnects to Tidal. Are you able to tell from log below why Roon is seeking for the Tidal login when it is already playing. Is this an issue with Tidal?

Try setting your DNS to google 8.8.8.8 and see if that helps the situation.

Hi @Patrick_Bryson,

In the log snippet you shared above it looks like there are some DNS errors occurring here. As Daniel suggested, we’ve seen Google DNS help with such errors previously, but I see that you mentioned it’s not possible to change this with your router.

One thing I’d like to suggest is bypassing the switch and connecting directly to the router via Ethernet. Is there any change when doing so?

It may be worth trying to log out/in from TIDAL in Roon and see if there is any change as well.

I have a virgin internet service and router and it’s not possible to change the DNS settings.

I have changed other parts and settings in my (complicated) audio chain and this seems to have helped with outages and stoppages. I’m still experimenting and not totally clear yet what is the route of the issue.

Were there any changes in your network setup today? Any devices in use that normally aren’t or anything like that?

If you reboot your networking gear and Core is there any change?

Thanks Dylan. Nothing has changed in my setup and yes I reboot regularly - that does often help.

In this case I’m trying to determine where the problem lies:

with Roon service
With my provider
Within my home network
my audio setup

Is it possible at all to tell from your diagnostics?

Hi @Patrick_Bryson,

Once you’re in this state, do the stoppages keep happening until you reboot?

It would be good to understand if this is only happening with TIDAL content or if it occurs with local content as well.

Since it occurs with network streaming or via USB, we know that the device you’re playing to doesn’t have any effect on things. Since that doesn’t matter, the two most likely options are a problem with the network playing TIDAL content or a problem on the Core machine that is stopping playback.

If we can test with local content and determine whether or not this happens, this will help us focus in on where these stoppages are stemming from.

It’s been a busy week so I’ve not had time to experiment much, but issues seem to be with local files and streaming, although I seldom play local files.

Overall the past few days the issues I have been having seem to have stopped again and everything is running smoothly with local music and streaming from tidal. I have not changed anything in my system set up.

This cycle of intermittent stoppages and then recovery has happened before and I am none the wiser as to what is the cause. I’ll post again if the issue arises.

Thanks for confirming that this also occurs with local files. Since we’ve determined it happens with local files, streaming content, USB devices, and network devices, this mostly leaves the Core machine as the likely culprit for the root cause of what you’re seeing.

The next time this occurs, it would be interesting to know if the same behavior occurs if you were to temporarily use a different Core machine. Are the stoppages occurring even on a different Core or is it Core specific?

What makes this puzzling is that I did exactly that. I have been running an alternate server from when I started this thread as recommended earlier and this solved my problems. … then they came back but have stopped again.

Hi @Patrick_Bryson — Just to verify, the two Cores do not experience this problem at the same time? It happens on each Core independently, but when it’s happening the other Core will work?

No, the first NUC roon core I mentioned at start of thread was worse with lots of stoppages etc so I concluded it was the source of problems, because when I switched back to my Antipodes roon core the problems went away. After a few months I had a period of the same problems (stoppages etc) returning on my Antipodes server which was puzzling. Now they seem to have gone away again. I did not run the cores at the same time.
