Roon keeps freezing and crashing on Windows (mostly when resuming from minimized) [Solved After Roon Build 1302]

Description of Issue

Hello,

With music playing in the background, when I resume Roon is very slow to resume (freezes) and often crashes.

I have not had this problem before and it is making Roon pretty much unusable for me.

Thanks,
Ryan

Hi @Ryan_Hodgson,

I would suggest updating the GPU drivers using the GPU manufacturer’s site.

I am also having this problem and am using the most recent NVIDIA drivers for my graphics card. This was never a problem until the last week or a bit more. Windows Event Viewer has logged an event each time a crash occurred, with the error reported in clr.dll or System.Core.ni.dll in every case as below:

Like Christian, I also have the latest GPU drivers and it started happening a few weeks ago.
Cheers

It is a named feedback item on the latest build 931. Multiple observations concern the Windows - build. Latest graphics drivers and avoiding window minimization help temporarily.

I’ve been having this issue for months, it’s not due to the last build and I always have my graphics drivers updated. It’s an ongoing issue with Roon

For me it appears that build 933 may have fixed things. Have had no trouble with Roon crashing/hanging when it has been minimized or in the background since that version installed. Keeping fingers crossed!

Roon is basically useless for me, still lots of hangs and crashes. Nothing to do with my GPU drivers etc. Will be going back to Tidal at this rate, very frustrating…

This issue is still ongoing. It may work NOT minimizing roon, as this happens when roon gets focus again, producing either two of these results:

  • Roon freezing momentarily (about 10 secs)
  • Freezing and then crashing (closing)

Yeah, I can confirm that it does still happen. My finger crossing with build 933 did not do any good, alas.

I also have this issue, it started about the time this thread appears to have been posted. Mine does not crash, but freezes for 10-20 seconds. I updated my drivers, it was no help.

It also does not happen every time, and is not always minimized - however it does only happen if I’ve let Roon play for a decent period of time, then go back to pause it or skip a song, etc.

I realize my issue has a lot of variables so its probably not a big help from a development standpoint - but just adding on to the thread in an attempt to lend credence to the problem

Hello, is there any update on this problem? None of the recent software updates have made a noticeable difference…

Yep, I’ve witnessed this happening daily the past month or so. If Roon was minimised for a while, try to maximise and it will hang for a couple of seconds then shut down.
I too have Nvidia 2060 RTX graphics with the latest drivers. Windows 11, all the latest updates.
Plus i have the issue that others in this forum have - click on settings and it will crash.

Description of Issue

Roon Core is intermittently crashing on Windows 11 PC. Crashes appear to be caused by either switching from another application to Roon on the W11 PC or by waking the PC from sleep, either from a WOL command or from a connected USB device (mouse, keyboard). This is not happening consistently.

Windows Event Tracker is capturing errors and generating reports. Here are a few of the errors and I can upload reports or Roon logs if needed.

If you’re using Intel onboard graphics, go to Intel website to download and install the latest drivers (not via Windows updates), and reboot.

If that does not solve your problem, Run MemTest86 Free for no less than 24 hours.

Thanks for the suggestions Peter.

I uninstalled the graphics driver and reinstalled from Intel website. I’ve not had a crash when switching from another app to Roon, however Roon is still shutting down regularly when waking the PC from sleep.

I ran MemTest 3 times (4hr run time each) over a 24hr period and no errors were found.

Roon Core has recently updated, still had a shut down on waking from sleep.

Suggestions anyone?

I had a lot of instability after recent roon releases on an i7 Windows 11 laptop with 16GB like yours. I have upgraded to 32GB and the crashes have gone away.

My library is a lot larger than yours (I think roon loads the entire library into memory) so your issues may be different but roon really uses a lot of memory. There are also reports of a memory leak on other threads. What you can do is open windows task manager to monitor memory usage before and during your crashes. What I found was that Windows would tolerate memory usage spikes up to about 93% to 95% before crashing roon. These spikes were occurring when switching between roon tasks just as you describe. I have upgraded to 32GB and roon is now much more stable.

Thanks for the suggestion of monitoring via task manager, Tony.

Crashes have greatly diminished, maybe because of graphics driver update, but still occasionally happening both at start-up and when switching from another app. What I’ve noticed in the monitoring is that there are no memory usage spikes, staying pretty constant at about 50%, but there has been a GPU 3D usage spike. Event Viewer still only reports that Roon has crashed, no reports on any other service.

I’ll search web for explanations of GPU spike – if this might actually be the cause? Note that motherboard is only 2 years old.

Disable Turbo Boost in BIOS.

Still having the problem of Roon Core crashing every few days.

I have:

  • Updated graphics drivers directly from Intel
  • Monitored for memory issues – none found and usage stable at about 50%
  • Disabled Turbo Boost in BIOS
  • Started a new Roon Core database

Crashes can happen on waking from sleep, waking up monitor or just switching from another app.

I have just now uploaded Roon logs (from old and new database) as well as Windows Event error reports for the last few crashes – hoping that Roon Support can review and see what the problem might be.

Thanks
BMc
