Roon loses access to core [Ubuntu 14.04; Solved by upgrade]

I am running the latest versions of roon with the core on an ethernet connected linux ubuntu 4.4.0-36-generic kernel. I am running the core with directly attached disks. it is an amd fx-83500 8 core processor with 16 GB ram installed.

Roon will intermittently lose access to the core, then usually restore it automatically but playing stops and must be restarted. This happens on all audio interfaces, realtek digital coax out to a parasound zdac v.2, a geek out v2a and a simple realtek 2 channel audio out.

I briefly looked over the log files and saw some suspicious errors in the roonserver log file.

Please advise as to what I can do to troubleshoot this issue. It is most annoying to have to restart play once the disconnect has occurred…

Thanks in advance…

It seems to be worse when more than one endpoint is in use.
It does happen if 1, 2, 3 (3 is all I ever use) endpoints in use.

System information: ubuntu 14.04lts.

@Phil_Kemp ---- Thank you for the very thorough report. I have passed this information back to my developers for review. Once they complete their evaluation or have an update I will reach back out to you with the progress being made. Thanks!

I added an SSD to the system to run the roon base off of.mounted it on /var. still getting dropouts. few in the afternoon, many tonight. the endpoint that I saw most of the dropouts on is an intel compute stick 4 core. running a LH Labs Geek out V2A on the USB port. the compute stick is connected to the network via ethernet. The other endpoint is my desktop running intel i7 3.44 MHz 16 GB ram Raid 5. i still get dropouts on both but it doesn’t seem to be as frequent on the desktop. I run a parasound zdac v2 on the realtek optical HD out from the motherboard.

I have noticed that memory use continues to go up. Are there memory leaks in the code?

The debug options that I can try here are:
1.) Run the roon server on the i7. not preferable since this is my main photography workstation, Lightroom and Photoshop are the primary apps here.
2.) Upgrade the linux ubuntu dist from the ubuntu website to 16.04 LTS.

Any comments?

PK

Hi @Phil_Kemp – we took another look at this as I know you’ve been having problems getting Roon to run stably in your configuration. This has been a tricky one to debug because we have so many users running on Linux without issue, but on a hunch we decided to set up a virtual machine in house on ubuntu 14.04, which is not a version that’s been part of our QA process over the last year.

Surprisingly, we were in fact able to reproduce this issue running that version of Ubuntu. Because the crash is not printing a stack trace to our logs, it seems like our initial suspicion about this issue was correct and this is not a crash in Roon’s code, but instead is likely to be some kind of interaction between the Mono framework Roon relies on and that specific version of Ubuntu.

Understanding the issue in this way is a good first step, but because the issue is not in our code, our options for making this configuration work are limited – it’s possible that things could be more stable in the future if/when we upgrade to a newer version of mono, but that typically requires weeks of QA and is generally a last resort for us in cases where it’s required to enable new functionality.

The more reasonable short term solution is to upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu. We test with a few versions going back a few years, but 14.04 is not part of our QA process. Hopefully that’s an option for you, and hopefully you can understand our need to limit our testing to recent versions of Ubuntu, especially with thousands of users running Roon on Linux without issue.

Thanks again for the report and please let us know if you need any additional information or clarification on the above.

OK, will upgrade to 16.04 and see what happens… glad you found the error though!
Thanks
Going to try that now…

With stock (and latest) ubuntu 16.04 roon ran all night without any disconnects… I’m going to let it run on different endpoints all day and see what happens… looks like I might have a stable installation… Thks for the help. PK

No dropouts at all since the 16.04 upgrade. Be aware that some packages may need a manual install (emacs24 for example) after the upgrade. Problem solved…
PK

that’s good news. With so many possible variants of OS out there it does make sense that sooner or later in the past versions a user might find something not working.

Good to record the outcome here for future searches.

Enjoy the working system :sunglasses:

thanks, will do!

Thanks for letting us know @Phil_Kemp – looks like this was an issue with Ubuntu 14.04.

Marking this one closed!
