Describe the issue

with KEF LSX: "Roon lost control of the audio device"

Describe your network setup

on ethernet via a simple d-link network switch

PS this issue happened every once in a while (like maybe once a week, since 2021) but recently (in last couple of weeks) happens multiple times a day, usually when I skip a track mid-play, or try to play a new album/playlist during playback.

The speakers are KEF LSX (the originals) and they are connected via ethernet to a D-link switch which is connected to my router (EdgeRouter4); I have an intel NUC running ROCK connected to the same router via ethernet.

The fix is always to (a) quit the Roon app (on a Mac Studio, also connected to the same switch via ethernet), and (b) unplug the KEFs from power, (c) plug the KEFs back into power, and (d) restart the roon app.

Once in a while I also have to reboot the ROCK NUC.

thanks!

Hey @plg,

Thanks for writing in! A few follow up questions for you:

  1. I see you also run Roon Server on your Mac Mini, does the same issue occur when using this machine instead of your ROCK to run Roon?
  2. Does this issue ever occur outside of Roon altogether? For example, if you use the KEFs when streaming content from youtube on the same Mac Mini.

Can you temporarily remove the switch and any other network gear temporarily, and get a direct ethernet connection from both the Kefs and your ROCK directly to your primary router?

Lastly, lets refresh your RAATServer database from your ROCK running Roon Server. You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder
