Roon MacOS M1 Mac Mini Kernel Panic Issues When Idle

Roon 1.8 (build 831) stable
Mac Mini M1 512 GB Storage/16 GB RAM Memory
Version 12.0.1 Monterey / Firmware 7429.41.5
Total Number of Cores: 8 (4 performance and 4 efficiency)
System Firmware Version: 6723.81.1

Networking:
TP-Link Archer C7 Router. I use M1 Mac Mini as my main computer, which hosts the core. Music files are stored on a samba drive being controlled by a Raspberry Pi that MacOS picks up easy.

Connected Audio Devices
Only audio device connected directly to MacOS is a Schiit Modi Multibit. I use moOde Audio Raspberry Pi OS for Roon Bridge within my Wi-Fi network to my DACs.

Description of Issue

When I go to sleep I lock my MacOS (but I set it up where it never goes to sleep mode), which have Roon running in the background as intended. When I wake up and log into MacOS, I discovered that MacOS had a kernel panic and thus it had rebooted itself in order to resolve the panic when I was sleeping. When reviewing the kernel panic file from MacOS, it said the reason of the panic was on Roon. Issue only happens when I am sleeping overnight, it never happens when I use Roon directly

I was curious if others had similar issues to kernel panics with their new M1 Machines?

Hey Uri, did this only happen once or is it something that happens every night? Can you try closing Roon for a few nights and see if you still get kernel panic?

I do too. I’ve uninstalled it from my mac because (fortunately) I had a windows machine laying around. I can confirm that my Mac Mini M1 also experienced regular kernel panics overnight when I’d leave roon running. FWIW, it should have been completely idle… and I didn’t have any scans of my folders set to anything other than at startup. I tried reinstalling multiple times before in essence rage quitting.

this was happening nightly until I decided to try the Monterey Version 12.1 Beta that is publicly available. This mostly stopped the kernel panics. I still get them here and there but none of them are being caused by Roon.

@Pratik_Dave if you are willing, give Monterey Version 12.1 Beta a shot. Downside is the Magic Trackpad (if you use it) is a little more sensitive than normal, but it mostly solved the panics on my end.

I had a similar problem, that I thought was being caused by Roon, but had an interesting discussion with Danny as to why this wasn’t the case. To sum up Danny’s point, Roon shouldn’t be able to cause a kernel panic. Sure, it can fail in its own right, but it shouldn’t be able to bring down the whole OS too. In the thread I just linked I initially thought that the problem might be to do with various kexts installed on my machine, but in the end it turned out to be a problem with a USB hub. Specifically, one hub piggy-backed off another. My solution was to replace the hub with a powered version and I haven’t had a single panic since.

tl;dr - it might be worth taking a look at the peripherals you have attached to the mini with a view to ruling them out as a cause.

Yep, @DaveN hit the nail on the head here. Roon shouldn’t be able to completely crash your computer, it’s almost always a macOS bug or failing hardware. The fact that the 12.1 Beta seems to resolve the issue, it’s likely the former.

Hello @kevin and @DaveN,

the previous panics on my end before I updated to the latest beta was not caused by USB Hubs. I didn’t use any USB Hubs and my Mac mini had some overnight panics. Ever since I did the beta update, I only had one overnight panic but this time it was with an USB Hub that was powered by the wall.

As of late I haven’t gotten any panics, so I presume Apple mostly fixed this issue on their M1 machines.
