Roon malfunctioning on Windows 11 with no compatibility bits set (ref#9TN3C9)

What’s happening?

· I'm having trouble connecting to Roon

What type of connection issue?

· Something else

Describe the issue

Once again, Roon won't work with Windows 11. No compatibility bits are set. Just will not work.

Describe your network setup

Intel NUC11 PC. That's it.

Roon runs on my Dell XPS 15 Windows 11 laptop with no issues. Are you trying to run in compatibility mode? If so, turn that off.

Can you give more details on what exactly you are experiencing? “Just will not work” does not give the Support team much to go on. Screenshots are always helpful.

This happened once before. By going into AppData, I could run Roon as administrator. Now that doesn’t work. I’ve I start Roon, I get the “not compatible” error message. Only this time it loops and I cannot stop it! I have to reboot. This is a disaster. I did take an Event Log, attached. Hopefully, that helps. This is a very simple Intel NUC11 system. The USB output goes to an external DAC.

All compatibility bits are OFF. How do I upload the Event Log?

Hi @David_Fair,
You can use this link to upload the event log. Just let us know when you uploaded it and we’ll take a look. Just so you know this coming Monday is a holiday in the US so the support team will be back on Tuesday.

OK, I don’t see how to upload anything to your website. So I put the Event Log in my public Dropbox folder. Here’s the link: Dropbox

Thanks @David_Fair,

We’ll investigate further. In the meantime, do you have a recent backup saved? If so, lets see if refreshing your Roon Server database may help. Steps to follow below:

  • Make a Backup of your current RoonServer Database (you can skip if you have a recent backup saved)
  • Exit out of RoonServer
  • Navigate to your RoonServer’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RoonServer”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old”
  • Reinstall the RoonServer App from our Downloads Page to generate a new RoonServer folder
  • On the Roon Remotes, press “Use another Roon Server” and connect to the new database

Benjamin, RoonServer will not run, so do not know how to make a backup of the database. Also, this is a simple Intel NUC11 system with everything on the NUC hard drive. No remotes.

See error message.
When I try to run Roon, I just get this error message:

Worse, it goes into a loop repeating that message till I reboot.

Sorry, the message I get when I attempt to run Roon is:

Were you able to look at my Event Log? I’ve made no progress on getting Roon to work again.

I cannot run Roon on my (completely updated) Windows 11 PC. Can someone please help?

While we’re waiting for @benjamin to pick this up again, can you clarify some things for me?

  • Your first message with screenshots shows Windows Fatal Error messages usually caused by trying to run Roon in Windows Compatibility Mode, yet you say that you are not doing this.
  • Your second message with a screenshot shows that the Roon client has started, but is waiting for your Roon Server - so presumably you have solved the cause of the Windows Fatal Error message - what was it?
  • You say you have an Intel NUC11 - this is the machine that is running Windows 11 and on which you have downloaded and installed Roon for Windows from the Roon Labs Download page, right? This will install both Roon and the Roon Server on your NUC.
  • Is Roon Server actually running? Check in the Windows Taskbar - see the Roon Server help article
  • What happens if you click the “Select a different Roon Server” link?

thanks for responding. looking for a solution! Last week, I deleted Roon and reinstalled it from your webpage. Win11 is up-to-date. If I run Roon, Task Manager shows it but does NOT show Roon Server running. I tried “Select a different Roon Server” and then selected “Setup Roon Server on this PC.” Nothing happened. I selected “Find my Roon OS Devices.” Again, nada.

Roon and Roon Server are two different applications.

You should have two shortcut icons showing on the Desktop if the software package has been downloaded and installed correctly, e.g.:

What happens when you double-click the Roon Server icon - does Roon Server get added to the Background Applications section of the Taskbar?

This does not apply to your setup - you are not running a Nucleus or ROCK/NUC device in your network - these are the only devices using Roon OS. You are using Windows OS.

update. I tried again, and for some unknown reason, this time the Roon app “found” the Roon Server. Roon seems to be working again! Don’t know why or how long it will last. Would still like to know the root cause of Roon not working for a week.

Make sure that you have “Launch at startup” checked in the Roon Server menu…

Not sure what you mean by “Roon Server menu.” I right-click on the Roon Server app, look at Properties. Don’t see a launch at startup option there. Where do I look?

As @Jim_F shows in his screenshot, you need to right-click on the Roon icon that is shown in the Taskbar in the section for applications that are running in the background. This icon is of the Roon Server.
