Morning all. I’m currently the 13th day of my free trial and have a few questions before signing up.
We’re a two person household and have separate computers and streaming service accounts. Can we use the same Roon account to manage our separate setups? If this isn’t possible, is there any kind of solution?
Does Roon support Apple Music?
Is ARC the only way of accessing your Roon account on the move?
Thanks!
A single Roon server can accommodate multiple users. They can even play different music at the same time. Each user can configure a link to their own Last.fm profile for keeping track of your listening history outside of Roon.
However, Roon does not allow multiple user connections to the same streaming service. You can connect to Tidal, Qobuz and/or KBOX. Each of these connections could be with a different user, but you cannot connect multiple users to the same streaming service. E.g. you could connect to Tidal and your partner could connect to Qobuz, but you cannot have to separate Tidal accounts connecting from Roon. Also note that any music you add from either account would be part of a single library, in which you would both be able to add your own playlists and tag of favorite music.
No. Roon does not support Apple Music (and probable never will)
ARC is the only officially supported was of accessing Roon on the move. Note that it will require a connection to your Roon server in order to function. Meaning that you will need to be able to connect through your firewall at home. ARC does offer an offline mode, which allows it to be used without an internet connection, but this would require you to download your music to ARC, which I believe is not possible with music coming from a streaming service.
Many thanks for your prompt response. Points 2 & 3 are understood. I have to say, however, I’m not sure I understand the behind your answer to point 1. Roon is very much at the high price point and I think it’s totally reasonable to expect that you will support the ability for users in the same household to have separate profiles linked to separate streaming accounts (for example Tidal) with different servers.
I’m just a user like you. I have no impact whatsoever on the feature set and pricing of Roon. I am only stating what is currently there.
As you mention “different servers”, I should clarify that you can run multiple Roon servers. This would allow you to have a separate Tidal account connected to each server. Note however, that if you want to run the servers simultaneously, you would need multiple Roon licenses. You can run multiple servers with a single license, but they cannot run an the same time.
@s73nm is not a staff member of Roon Labs - he’s a customer, just like me.
The requirement for supporting multiple streaming accounts is understood and I encourage you to vote on the existing Feature Suggestion:
When Roon first came on the scene, 10 years ago, it was designed to have multiple profiles, but did not have any integration with streaming services at all. That came later.
Edit: I’ve been told that Roon did in fact launch with a Tidal integration (Qobuz came later and KKBOX came later still). Tidal however, had not yet debuted their family plans. So, Roon created streaming integration mechanisms and database decisions, prior to these streaming services offering family plans.
I suspect that it’s a tricky architectural issue to retrofit support for multiple streaming accounts and map them on to Roon profiles.
However, Roon Labs are aware of the requirement, and we will just have to see what will happen.
