Debussy’s Images 1 and 2 by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli.

For me Michelangeli always feels like home base. For Seong-Jin Cho and Víkingur Ólafsson I’ll have to refresh my memory. Bavouzet Debussy I’ll have to add to the queue as I did listen mainly to his Mozart cycle. For Chopin I would like to add Elisabeth Leonskaja and for Debussy, Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

Noriko Ogawa’s Rimsky-Korsakov Concerto for piano & orchestra in C sharp minor with Kees Bakels/Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and off-the-beaten-path Alexander Tcherepnin’s Piano Concertos with Lan Shui/Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

I deeply enjoy comparative listening. Helps me better understand the piece, the performer, the instrument used and the impact of sound engineering/recording location (as Andreas has pointed out on several occasions).

Playing on a 1850s Erard piano, this is Patrick Cohen’s recording of Chopin’s Mazurkas for Glossa from the late 1990s… Most everybody will have heard of Chopin, and to learn a little about Patrick Cohen I’d have you read the cited column from the New Yorker.
