I rec the HDTT’s version…I have the old CD, some other remaster stream and then the HDTT’s version which i prefer the best…$10-$23 depending on if you get the PCM CD quality or the DSD or DXD. I like alot of their stuff though the DSD stuff is a bit spending: High Definition Tape Transfers
Sorry, I am late to the party; reading on of sequence…what did you think? I have too many favs of this piece as I think I own practically all of complete cycles and many individual #2’s…but this one is a good one as is the Segerstam (prob my fav), Szell (both close 2nds), Paray, Jarvi (son (cincy over paris) over his father), Vanska (1st), Bernstein (NYP), Davis (LSO Live SACD over Boston SACD…both good), Berglund (all of them, 1st prob most), Ormandy (old HDTT bluray 4 channel), Beecham, Nelsons (5 channel download), Orama, Saraste then the rest…Kamu, Karajan, Ashkenazy, Salonen (live), Gibson, Abravenal, Collins (not great really)…so many more
State your unpopular opinion:
Sibelius 5 > Sibelius 2.
I love them both…love all 7 of his symphonies really (plus the Kalevala)…but I think the 2nd just speaks to me more on a higher level than the 5th via the entire piece and finale especially…7th prob also right up there…but even the initially hard for me to “get”, 4th, is now decades later one of my favs…I remain shocked that so many folks don’t like Sibelius but to me nearly everything the man wrote is just extraordinary.
I read a book a few years ago which surveyed his works, and I listened to everything along the way. Even though I had long been a fan, I discovered a lot that I had never heard before which I really enjoyed.
bookmarking this post, to make sure I listen to them all…
Haha! You got them the wrong way round
Totally with you. If not too off topic, I had the good fortune to hear Jansons and the Royal Concertgebouw live in this, and it was one of the great experiences. It may be my system, but it is so hard to capture the scale of the orchestra in the finale.
Really enjoying the Sibelius 2 recommendations, but another composer I have underappreciated is Bartok. I love to hear Bluebeard live (the 5th door!) but haven’t spent enough time on other works.
So, almost by accident, I decided to listen to this latest Verbier release, and was knocked out by ‘The Miraculous Mandarin Suite’…as thrilling as Stravinsky?
impressive.
I listened to the Previn/Pitt last night, and it’s very good indeed.
Thanks for the recommendation, I was unfamiliar with this piece by Mosolov, it would make a great addition to the Eerie Classical playlist.
I agree @Bill_Lee, thank you for noting that, and thanks as well to @Thomas_Becker for recommending it. Mosolov’s Iron Foundry has been added to the list!
Regulars here may know that I am a total fanboy for Sara Mingardo, the great Italian Contralto.
However, today I offer you a different rendition of Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater. Marie-Nicole Lemieux gives an emotional, highly charged performance of this most dramatic of works. The sparse nature of the orchestration requires a great voice to perform this well. She delivers perfectly.
Salve Classical Cognoscenti!
I’m excited to report that the new installment of our Classical Community playlist is live on the Roon home page. You’ll find another inspired selection of expert recommendations culled from the lively conversation here and a few newer releases added by me.
My sincerest appreciation goes out to our playlist contributors for the new edition. In order of appearance: @Andreas_Philipp1, @Richard_Graham, @Martin_Kelly, @Gadnoz_Seek, @Nathan_Wilkes, @bill_perkins, @eclectic, @woodford, @Bugsrus, @Thomas_Becker, and @mSpot
Thank you all once again for your lovely contributions to this list and continuing conversation!
I came to this via Keith Emerson. I still prefer the ELP. Fourth movement Piano Concerto 1. “Toccata”.
Oh yes, she does! Love her voice and her art…
By Spinosi and his Ensemble Matheus there are a couple of albums from the late 1990s, with concerti by Vivaldi, released on Pierre Verany… Those I enjoy very much!
