I’m enjoying this performance of some of my favourite Elgar and Delius works.
It’s also an excellent recording (as usual) by Channel Classics, released in January 2025.
Sharing this album with my friends. Interesting to compare the first and final versions of Mendelssohn violin concerto. The orchestration of Fanny M. Quartet is also done very delicately and with good balance and taste. Great sound too.
Listening to this again. IMO, (as I think I commented previously) it’s a fine performance of some of my favourite Vaughan Williams and Elgar works…

Possibly one of the most touching yet not easily accessible pieces of sacred music:
The number of available recordings is inexplainably limited, and just a handful do the piece justice in terms of choir and soloists. One might argue that this particular one, by Marek Janowski, is slightly neglecting the deeply spiritual, catholic and emotionally overwhelming character of the composition, in favor of an almost choral-symphony-like approach. That’s exactly why I prefer it. It is giving the piece some sort of universal spirituality, prioritizing the admiration of music over its inherent Catholicism, if that makes sense.
Does anyone like this version, especially of No. 3 where plenty of versions available?
I am a big fan of the Quatuor Mosaiques and the Chiaroscuro Quartet when it comes to hip versions, but I have really issues hearing Spunicunifait.
