ROON MY Journey

Hi, I came across Roon over 6 years ago, I loved the interface experience immediately. I was also frustrated immediately due not to Roon but my poor internet. I bought the lifetime membership as I realised I wanted to be in it for the long haul. That turned out to be a bargain, I cannot remember the joining fee from 6 years ago but I am ahead of the game. I use Roon daily.

About 4 years ago I splashed out on a Roon Nucleus, this survived the many reboots etc until earlier this year. The ssd that Roon is on had failed, I read horror stories of huge costs to get this fixed. As a recent retiree funds did not allow for this path. Nucleus sat there gathering dust, I asked here for help but got no replies. I read a post with fairly detailed info on the Nucleus and it pointed to a failed ssd drive, so I opened it up, read the data printed atop the ssd and ordered a replacement from Amazon, AU$40, I fitted the replacement ssd and then installed Roon ROCK I had trouble with the missing codecs but after a really helpful guy got them to me and I installed them my Nucleus was up and running again, complete satisfaction ensued, a great feeling for a 70 year old. I feel I have stayed fully committed to Roon despite my setbacks, Qobuz has integrated perfectly for me, I strongly feel the biggest issue people have can be resolved by a GOOD internet service, if it is in any way flakey then the problems start, Roon gets blamed, since I moved about 3 years ago from very rural to suburbia my internet and Roon has been rock steady.

Rock on Roon

You should ask Roon Support to update you back to the OS version for the Nucleus. There are potential issues in running ROCK on a Nucleus.

Hi Daniel, what issues please? How do I go about talking to them. Here’s the latest screenshot isn’t this ok then? Cheers Nick

Ask Roon support to install the Nucleus passive heat attenuation on your Nucleus lest it might overheat.

Just to be clear, it’s not like it’s going into thermonuclear meltdown due to missing software. It will run just fine, as any fanless computer, given some sufficient space to “breathe” and reasonable surronding temperatures.

The software adds some “throttling” (i belive) and the motherboard itself WILL reboot/stop the system if it should overheat. And as many things in life, once won’t kill it, repeated reboots are symtoms of issues to be solved elsewhere, rather than adding software throttling…

The purpose of the Roon upgrade from NUC to Nucleus is to prevent overheating of the Nucleus. If you do a reinstall of the Roon software on your Nucleus, you should have Roon Labs do the conversion from NUC to Nucleus. If you don’t do this, you run a risk of overheating which can cause a failure of your Nucleus.
