Just something interesting I noticed, Roon no longer converts DSDs to PCM if you have DSP settings enabled, on previous versions it would. Could someone explain this to me? I thought anything that affects DSDs needs to be/is converted to PCM before its sent to your device
Clearly, it is converted to PCM since it passes through the sigma-delta modulator after DSP.
No idea if the missing PCM conversion step is a regression or intentional. The only way to have Roon look into this is to open a Support request.
I’m not using ROON any more, so can’t give you screen shots, and, unfortunately, the knowledge base is hopeless in that regard, but there used to be the setting to do DSP without converting DSD to PCM first - so look at your settings.
It seems something has changed. Skipping PCM conversion only skips down-sampling to 352.8kHz, but still converts samples to 64bit float before DSP, and I seem to remember that step was shown. Delta-sigma modulation converts back to 1 bit. But I’m not using Roon anymore either so I can’t try it.
I think it is a display issue (regression). For example, if PEQ and headphone EQ are active, only the first is displayed. Likewise, use crossfeed and PEQ, and only crossfeed is displayed.
PS. Doesn’t affect PCM.
The regression is not when selecting conversion to PCM, but when applying DSP to DSD, and sending DSD (or DoP) to the DAC.
Thanks for the clarification. ![]()
It’s just avoiding rate conversion, that’s all.
I’m curious what you’re using instead of Roon. I’ve not found anything comparable for playing to multiple endpoints from various brands, DSP, grouping and not to mention managing my local library as well. I’ve got a variety of players, NAD, Bluesound, Eversolo and Sonos. I’ve fiddled with Audirvana and Plex but none come close to the feature set in Roon.
I’m using Lyrion, formerly LMS. It’s lacking some of Roon’s coolest features and the UX is just ok, but it does support multiple zones (I’m using RPi, PiCorePlayer and USB DACs), works with Qobuz, I can connect to it remotely using OpenVPN, and the only library management I need is album/artist search. I really like Roon, and I’m glad it’s still around, but I’ve decided, for entirely non-technical reasons, that they don’t deserve my business and I’m sticking with that decision (and not going to discuss about it.)
