I am ripping my CD collection and Roon is not adding the new files I have ripped after the initial scan. I use an M2 Macbook Pro running Sequoia 15.6.1 OS
Describe your network setup
My home network is cable based provided by Spectrum. They supplied both the router and the modem.
Could you please let us know where the newly ripped music files are being saved?
For example — are they on your Mac’s internal drive, an external USB drive, or a network share (NAS)?
Also, please check if this folder has been added as a “Watched Folder” in Roon:
Open Roon > Settings > Storage
Verify that the folder where your new music is saved appears in the list
If not, click “+ Add Folder” and add that location manually
Once added, Roon will automatically detect and import any new files placed there.
Hi, Thanks for responding. I am saving all my music files to a folder on a 5tb LaCie external hard drive. I double checked to be sure that folder was addedas a “Watched Folder” and can verify it is there. I’ll add a screen shot of that page so you can see it as well.
Really appreciate your help. Many thanks for that.
It’s not a good idea to rip CDs directly into a Watched Folder - you should use a staging folder; i.e. rip your CDs into a folder and once the ripping process is complete, copy the resulting files and folders into a Watched Folder.
The reason is that the ripping process is slow, and while files gradually appear, Roon Server is trying to identify the album, but because the album is currently incomplete, the identifiaction process is likely to fail.
So I should remove the current 5TB LaCie external hd I am ripping to as a Watched Folder, add another external hd as the Watched Folder, and copy the ripped files to it, correct? Just want to be sure. Some questions then … If I remove the current LaCie, then all those files will not appear on Roon? I will need to copy them back to the hd selected as the Watched folder, right? Will Roon recognize files that have already been added previously as duplicates or will I need to be careful to only added new files? I am asking because in the initial scan, Roon transfered about 1.1TB of music to the app but since then, I have ripped a bit more than 500GB to the Music Library file on the LaCie hd I had selected as the Watched Folder. The way the ripping software adds files to the folder, I won’t be able to tell what was added after Roon did the initial scan. Hope that makes sense. How would you recommend I handle it? Thanks again for the help!
I will do that going forward. But what about all the files I’ve added to the Watched Folder that Roon has not added to the app? Is there a way to start over without creating a problem?
Well, looking at your screenshot of your Watched Folders, it seems as though Roon has not imported any of the files and folders on your external drive into your Roon Library because it only says “Watching for new files in real time” and does not display a message giving the number of tracks imported (as is showing for your Music Folder).
The “Music Folder” in your screenshot is the default Music folder of your MacBook Pro…
Is there a setting I missed? I’m ripping to the LaCie and not the “Music Folder” on my Mac. (I’m guessing that folder is related to the Apple Music app?) I have a folder on the LaCie I’ve named “Music Library.” That’s where I’m ripping the cd’s to. Should I not have that folder and have just added the ripped files directly to the LaCie without the added layer of the Music Library file folder? Puzzled as to why Roon is not “seeing” the files I’ve added to it and imported them into the app. I’m not very tech savy in a deep way. Probably know enough to get myself into trouble. Appreciate your patience and help in guiding me through all this.
I suspect that you haven’t specified the folder on the LaCie drive correctly as a Watched Folder.
Looking again at your screenshot, you seem to have just added the LaCie drive, instead of selecting the Music Library folder on the drive and adding that as your Watched Folder. That might explain why Roon is failing to import anything on the drive.
Please click the “3 dots” menu icon next to that LaCie entry and choose Edit. Then browse the drive and select the Music Library folder to be the Watched Folder. Save it, and let’s see if Roon then starts importing files into your library…
Problem solved! I had two LaCie external hd’s connected to my Macbook. I had selected the one that was showing up as an option to add to the Watched Folder but it was not the hd with the Music Library on it. For some reason the other one wasn’t showing as available in Roon. I unmounted both hd’s from Finder and unplugged both. I plugged in the one with the Music Library on it into the other port and it showed up in the app as an option so I was able to choose it and the Music Library folder as the Watch Folder. Roon immediately started uploading the files. Looks like all is well now! Thank you very much for the excellent help!
