Recently I penned a complaint about Roon having a LOT of stoppages. I halfway resolved this by plugging my ifi Zen stream into router and now I get a long delay before music plays but I’m not getting the stoppages.
I did the above as an undesirable compromise because I bought the ifi Zen stream for my headphone unit at home and that use case just isn’t working with Roon.
Now, I have my PC USB out to a Schiit Eitr coax to Schiit Modi 2 DAC. This arrangement works flawlessly with all PC applications (youtube, VLC etc) but not with Roon. This arrangement worked with Roon (no drops etc) until days ago and now my Windows 10 PC is not being detected by Roon no matter what I do.
headphone current use case: Router wifi out > TP link wifi extender ethernet out > PC > USB out > Schiit Eitr coax out > Schiit Modi 2 DAC
Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old”
Restart the RoonServer in the WebUI to generate a new Roon database folder
On the Roon Remotes, press “Use another Core” and connect to the new database
Let me know if your issue persists after the above. If it does, please share the date and time the next time you run into connectivity issues. I’ll be on standby for your reply. Thanks!
There was a flood situation recently and the power went out a few times before I unplugged everything. Before the situation everything was working well once I got a new router mesh system which seems to help Roon perform well. Since the outages, there have been problems getting Roon to recognize devices again:
My desktop PC Roon app and phone app detects some but not all devices (detects chromecasts and TVs but not my PS Audio streamer/DAC or my Schiit Eitr which is connected to my PC).
I have restarted the PC audio DAC and the Schiit Eitr a number of times. I have restarted roon. I have removed it and installed roon server on my roon core (synology NAS). Nothing helps.
I’m so sorry to hear you’ve had flooding issues, I hope everything was able to be salvaged and has since dried up.
I wasn’t able to connect to your core device to activate a fresh diagnostic report, and so we’ll need to have you send over a manual set of Roon logs. Please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader.
If possible, please reproduce the issue and take note of the date and time as well, before uploading the log set for review. Thanks, Adam!
Thanks for sending logs over. A few follow-up questions for you:
Do you see the PS Audio / Schiit Eitr devices in the audio midi settings on your PC? Or, are you able to get them setup on other software outside of Roon?
To confirm, you refer to re-installing Roon on your NAS core device, correct? Or, did you test out installing the core on your PC?
Let’s refresh your RAATServer database as a next step. You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:
Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder
On your PC, can you confirm that you have the "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device ” checkbox checked in the Advanced Windows Sound Settings?
What happens if you disable exclusive mode on either devices, are you able to access these settings?
Thinking about this a bit more, does the same issue occur if you connect these devices wirelessly? If you swap cables and ports, does the same issue occur?
A few additional follow-up questions I’m still curious on:
If possible, could you share a screenshot of your Settings>Audio as well, that would be helpful.
To confirm, it is greyed out within your PC audio midi settings? Are you able to get it connect to another remote device other than the PC? Can you check and confirm that the firmware is up to date on both devices?
I’m now using a brand new computer with the latest firmware installed on all devices. I have the most updated version of Roon. Roon still fails to detect anything beyond a few chromecast devices.
Also you had suggested I restart the RAAT server in my core. This calls for me to make a backup first. I can’t do this. When I save a backup it does not seem to actually save as in my list of backups the latest one is only ever one from late May that I had made.
I really can’t believe Roon thinks this is acceptable. This is my worst experience with any kind of software. In the almost year I’ve had Roon it has worked properly maybe 15% of the time.
