Roon not downloading purchased iTunes music (ref#I7FK94)

What’s happening?

· Other – My issue isn’t listed above

Describe the issue

Roon downloaded much of my music from iTunes. However, it did Not download any of the music I Purchased from iTunes.

Describe your network setup

I have spectrum internet service but use eero as my router

Are those iTunes files drm protected? What is their file extension?

How do you mean? Roon by itself does not download anything, whether streaming or purchases.

Hello @genecaldwell,

Roon doesn’t actually download any music from iTunes or other sources — it simply indexes and plays files that already exist in the folders you’ve added to your library.

Could you please clarify what you mean by “Roon downloaded my music”?

It displays and plays my music that reside on my computers except the music on those computers that were Purchased from iTunes/Music.

Correction I meant to say Roon displays and plays music that reside on my computers. The one exception is music I purchased from iTunes/Music. This purchased music sits on the same computers as the ones recognized by Roon.

Don’t know the answer to your questions

DRM = Digital Rights Management.

iTunes may contain DRM called Fairplay, which will prevent playback on other players.

You can use software to remove the DRM.

How would I know if DRM/Fairplay is present? What software will remove it?

Hey @genecaldwell,

Thanks for the follow-up!

It depends on when and how you purchased the music. Here’s how to check:

On a Mac or PC:

  1. Open Apple Music (or iTunes on older systems).
  2. Go to your Library → Songs view.
  3. Right-click a song and select Get Info → File tab.
  4. Look for the “Kind” field.
Here’s what it means:
  • Protected AAC audio file → DRM-protected (FairPlay DRM).
  • Purchased AAC audio file or Apple Music AAC audio file → may or may not be protected:
    • Purchased AAC audio file (from 2009 or later) = no DRM.
    • Apple Music AAC audio file (from a subscription, not purchase) = DRM-protected.
  • MPEG audio file / MP3 → no DRM.
If you bought the track before April 2009, it may have FairPlay DRM. Apple switched to DRM-free “iTunes Plus” tracks after that.

One easy way to remove DRM is to re-download DRM-free versions (if available)

If your tracks were purchased from iTunes before 2009:

  1. Open Apple Music / iTunes and sign in with your Apple ID.
  2. Go to Account → Purchased → Music.
  3. Re-download the tracks — many are now DRM-free “iTunes Plus” versions.

Let us know if you’re able to verify the file type! :folded_hands:

If it is DRM protected from iTunes the file should have the extension m4p. Caveat: I haven’t bought a file from iTunes in many, many years as there are much better options so I don’t know if iTunes files are still drm-protected.or if protected files still have the m4p extension (but they once did).

I used Requiem to un-drm Kindle files to use on my Kobo. I understand it is suppossed to work on music files as well, but I haven’t used it for that.

No longer maintained, and unlikely to work with recent versions of Apple Music.

I did Not see a “Kind” field

I later found the “Kind” field. It stated “Purchased AAC audio file” It was purchased after 2009. So, if it is Not protected how do I get roon to recognize it?

Hi @genecaldwell,

My apologies here - is this purchased iTunes music in the same watched folder you’ve already added in your Roon Settings>Storage?

See if the steps in this KB help you:

All files are in the same folder/location. Could my issue have anything to do with the fact I am using the Roon 14 day free trial program.
Also, can I stream Apple Music using Roon?

No, it’s the same as the regular version.

No, only Tidal, Qobuz, KKBOX, and local (downloaded) files

Hi @genecaldwell,

We wanted to close the loop on this issue since some time has passed without a firm conclusion.

Content downloaded from iTunes/Apple Music that is protected will end in the .m4p extension. If you do not see this extension on these files (they end in .AAC or any other file extension), then there is likely another reason why Roon won’t import this content.

First, for due diligence, please verify that these track files actually reside within a location in your Watched Folders in Roon. If you haven’t configured Roon to watch the folder hosting these iTunes tracks, it won’t see them regardless of any DRM protection. See here for more on Watched Folders and Importing:

Second, Roon is not integrated with Apple Music. There’s no way to transfer your Apple Music streaming library into Roon. You can import non-DRM content you have downloaded by importing it into Roon. You can also export playlists from Apple Music to Roon via .XML import. See here:

Please let us know if you have any further questions and we’re happy to clarify or elaborate. Thank you!
