Roon not launching after adding a large music library on Mac M1 Mini (ref#ACHB1E)

Describe the issue

Roon is currently not booting on my Mac M1 Mini.

I recently added a new folder to library which has 200,000 tracks, and Roon has been processing them for four or five days now.
As it was taking so long and moving slowly, I decided to re-launch Roon.

However, it will no longer launch.

Describe your network setup

Hard drives with music are connected to Mac Mini (where roon is running) via usb-c

Hi @russell1,
Welcome to the Roon Community! Thanks for reaching out to us to ask about this issue. When you try to launch Roon now what happens? Do you see any error messages?

Often looking at logs for the Roon server can help resolve issues. Can you please use the directions found here and send over a set of RoonServer_logs to our File Uploader?

Hi Daniel,

I have just uploaded the roon logs as requested, using your ‘Logs Upload Server’.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hey @russell1,

Thanks for following up! Based on your account profile, we’re seeing multiple Mac’s running Roon Server, one being a Mac mini and the other a MacBook pro.

Which device are you hoping to be your long term server?

Are you able to add/import your tracks in smaller groups to test performance?

Is Roon Server still online and active? If so, do you have any issues opening Roon on other devices?

Lets setup a fresh instance of Roon (not Roon Server) on the issue Mac:

  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location on the Mac
  • Find the folder that says “Roon”
  • Rename the “Roon” folder to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Hi Benjamin,

I have already done a new installation of Roon - including renaming the folders ‘Roon old’.
This was done when it stopped launching a few weeks ago, after I attempted to add more tracks to my existing library then.

Due to the fact that my library is quite large (maybe 500k tracks total) I have adding by genre (which have their own folders), gradually.

The main Mac I’m using is the Mac Mini, and I’m using a Macbook or iPad/iPhone as clients.
Roon opens on these other devices but obviously there’s no server for them to connect to at the moment.

Sorry if I missed it . What drives are you using ? What enclose are you using ?

I’m using a NVME SSD and a thunderbolt 4 enclose with a Thunderbolt cable on a M1 MacBook with no issues at all.

I’m using two Seagate Exos 20TB in a Terramaster D6-320 enclosure.

Hi @russell1,
I’ve activated diagnostics on your account. Our diagnostics show an unmanaged crash after a few minutes after starting the server every time it starts. I know you did a Roon_old already however that only reinstalls the Roon client. Let’s try doing the server next.

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon + RoonServer (from taskbar area)
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon Server”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old”
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Here is the process outlined from a macOS machine:
