Roon Nucleus does not see locally-stored music, so cannot create Library

I have a new Roon Nucleus and have just started a Roon trial (before subscribing). While i can play music from Qobuz with no problem, Roon does not see my music stored on my Melco Music Library (Roon Ready Melco N1ZH2/EX). As a result i cannot add any files to create a Library in Roon because Roon does not see the Melco or any of the files stored on its hard drive.

My system is simple. It comprises a broadband router less than a year old supplied by my provider (EE - I am in the UK). The router is linked by ethernet cables to the Nucleus and to the Melco. The Melco is linked to the USB-DAC card in my Accuphase E4000. I have tried alternative ethernet cables but the problem remains. I have also rebooted every part of my system, repeatedly. Any suggestions welcome.

Are you saying that when you go to settings:storage you cannot add the Melco as a network share?
That is the way you will need to add it for Roon to see your music on it.

Have you read this, it might help.
How to Roon: Add Your Music Collection - Roon Labs

Thanks. I have tried to add as a network share as you suggest. I have the network address for my Melco and have tried entering it in various formats but Roon says the format is incorrect. Any further thoughts?

Can you post a screenshot of exactly what you are entering in the add network share section of storage?
And just as a thought, do you also have a regular PC on the same network and if so can that see the Melco on your network?

This is my latest attempt in the network share screen. I hope you can see it?
The Melco is the local host (N-2E1B). I have tried it both with and without Including the word ‘share’. I have also tried using the IP address. I have also tried with/without the username and password.

And, on my Windows laptop I can see the Melco in File Explorer.

Thanks

Thanks for this. I will take a look.

I don’t think share helps any but are you sure the name is exactly as you see it in file explorer?
Just \\name\ should suffice.

I have double-checked the name given in file explorer and tried entering it in the network share screen with every combination of \ and , both with and without the word ‘share’. I have also tried with and without the username and password. Every time I receive the same error message of invalid network path specified. I seem to be running out of options?

Enter “\” and the N1’s IP address or friendly
name (hostname) into the address bar of
Explorer, then press the Enter key.
For macOS, click Go from Finder and select
Connect to Server, then enter “smb://” and the
N1’s IP address or friendly name (hostname).
If the username and password are required,
enter “nobody” for both.

I assume the friendly name you used is from the N1’s display? You could try the IP address instead.

Furthermore, don’t use “share” (see above), and test without username and password first.

Thanks for this. I have tried everything I think - IP address, friendly name, with and without ‘share’, with and without ‘username’ and ‘password’……… I can’t think what else I can do. But I can see the Melco hard drive and the contained music when I look at it in File Explorer on my Windows laptop, so it is certainly present on my network!

Going by the documentation that @Suedkiez posted, have you tried a network address of \\N-2E1B\Internal\ ?

Brilliant! It works using ‘Internal’ as you suggest. I tried so many variants but somehow never that one. Frustration now over!

Many thanks to you and all others who kindly made helpful suggestions.

The manual isn’t being very clear on this! Glad that @Geoff_Coupe spotted the crucial info there.

As an FYI, when you do this you are streaming the music to the RoonServer first, the RoonServer then processing it to PCM (or DSD) and then sending it back to the endpoint. I always find it better to keep the music local to the RoonServer instead.
