Description of Issue

Power button will not turn on my Nucleus. Where do I send it for repair?

@JS_Wynant, I have merged your posts; there’s no need to post about the same issue multiple times.

It would be helpful if you shared a little more information. For instance, what have you tried to resolve the matter, e.g., checked the power cable?

Also, please confirm when and where you purchased the Nucleus. If it was a dealer, they are your first port of call for returns.

Incidentally, please note that I am a community moderator, and Roon user like yourself. I do not represent Roon Labs.

Hi Martin,

I confirmed with my multimeter that the power cable is putting out the correct voltage (I recall 19 volts) and the plug fits securely into the unit.

I purchased the unit in January 2021 from Kevin McEvoy who owns a Home Theatre business in Florida.

I did notice an electrical smell coming from my audio rack. All other units are functioning so it might have been a circuit in the Roon. Although it continued to work until the next day.

It is plugged into a Furman 15i power conditioner.

I’m pretty handy so maybe they could just send a replacement for the circuit assembly inside the unit?

Thanks,

JS

I understand that the Nucleus comes with a 2-year warranty, and unfortunately, you’re just outside this period. You may want to try using a computer repair centre (the board is an Intel NUC), or wait for Roon support to reply.

Can Roon recommend a computer repair center near me (Boston) that knows how to fix it?

Will an actual Roon tech support customer service person now join this conversation for next steps?

Maybe they will cover under warranty since I’m only a few months out of warranty and I lost several months of using the Nucleus, while continuing to pay for the app, when the files got corrupted somehow and I couldn’t get support to figure that out?

Thanks

Hi @JS_Wynant ,

If the power button won’t light up, this is likely an issue with the power button itself, or with the motherboard. The unit is out-of-warranty, but there are a few more advanced troubleshooting steps we can do before looping in the RMA team.

To confirm if it is an issue with the power button you can try to open the Nucleus bottom panel and push the white power button attached to the motherboard, shown below:

If you try to plug in the Nucleus via HDMI to a TV or monitor and turn the Nucleus on, do you see anything displayed?

If there’s no output on the HDMI, you can try to perform a CMOS battery reset procedure, this has helped some Nucleus after power outage issues, but please follow the steps exactly (including thermal paste):

If this CMOS reset procedure still does not help, then we would need to start an RMA on the unit to inspect it in our service center.

Noris,
Thanks for the clear instructions. It must be the power button failing. The white light came on when I pushed the little button on the motherboard. And the Roon app on my iPad connected with the Nucleus and I am able to play music.

It looks like it is easy to unplug and replace the power button. Can you send me a replacement? Is there an improved power button - the one it came with does seem hard to tell if it engages or not. I’m curious what failed in the button. Could that be what caused the bad smell when a circuit fails? I noticed that the day before it stopped working.

Hey @JS_Wynant,

Thanks for giving the above a try! It does indeed sound like the power switch has failed on your device. I will follow up with next steps for an RMA via PM. :+1:

Thanks Ben - not sure what PM means, but can you just send me a replacement power button that I can install? Easy to remove the nut holding it to the back panel and plug into motherboard.

Hi @JS_Wynant ,

PM means private message in this context. We would need to gather shipping and purchase details, and this is done in private messages for security. Please click the link below to respond to @benjamin 's RMA questions (only you and Roon staff have access to the below link):
