I have skimmed this thread and I have a question: there is a lot of focus on “high performance”.
Why do you think a high performance computer is a good thing?
There are specific scenarios that are demanding, but unless you need those, a lot of idle power does not improve anything.
I have discussed this:
It is very tempting to get more horsepower.
Get the biggest processor you can get, or can afford.
It’s a long tradition, partially because those of us who have grown up with PCs always complained that they were underpowered.
And now we have phones instead, and eagerly await the next super-duper phone.
And hey, let’s admit it’s a guy thing. I drive a ridiculously overpowered car. And Tesla has its “ludicrous mode” acceleration. Vroom!
But for our music players, I think it is unwise. I like t…
I know the argument for doing upsampling in Roon, rather than in the DAC.
I have tried it, and I find it not compelling, with my good DACs, like Meridian 818v3 and DSP8000SE, and the Chord Hugo 2. I hear no difference.
And that includes MQA, where I let Roon do the first unfold (because I do DSP room correction). People have suggested that I should upsample in Roon with minimum phase filter, but if I don’t the Meridian does it on its own, with the same type of filter (to 704/768). And whatever…
