Describe the issue
After one week away, Roon on iOS is stuck in the ‘wait circle’.
SETUP Nucleus, purchased direct from Roon Music on Nucleus SSD and a web storage SSD on my network which it monitors Usage: Per the Nucleus webpage 192.168…. I have 2TB SSD storage, 30% available. The Database has 97% available of 114GB Music server: primarily a MiniDSP SHD I also have some Sonos which I rarely drive via Roon Devices- all iOS M1 or better; MacOS on M1
Tried- Rebooting via 192 page Hard plug-pull on Nucleus Reinstall Operating System (twice) - v1.0 (build 259) from 192 page Restart Roon server software from 192 page
Results- When restarting Roon on iPad etc, I usually get ‘Connect to your server’ version 2.54 build 1554 green circle Ready When I select Connect, nothing beyond the half-circle wait thingy. Waited as long as overnight. After some attempts, I get a request to log in. When I do so it wants me to re-log in to Tidal and Qobuz. I do that but get to a Roon screen which unfortunately shows no library stuff, mo playlists, and no devices to play. When I hit Manage Devices I get a screen that says Audio but no obvious next steps.
Because when I launch Roon and select the Nucleus, I never get past the half moon ‘hourglass’ so I don’t get to a menu to do it. Should I do it using the 192.168.. Roon Database and Settings RESET? I’m really afraid I’ll lose years of playlists…
Do you have any backups of your Roon database? I took a deeper look over your logs, and it looks like unfortunately, the M2 operating system SSD has begun to show signs of hardware failure according to our diagnostic report. Were the playlists stored on TIDAL/Qobuz/KKBOX by any chance? To resolve the issue of the failing M2 drive, you can either replace the drive yourself, or we can service it in our repair center for a fee, let us know how you’d like to proceed.
My playlists are in Roon, not the streaming services. I do have a backup as of this morning. To replace the SSD- I have put SSDs on PC boards in the past so could do it. I’d need to know how to get the OS onto the drive. Do you have instructions I can review before deciding whether to DYI or send it in? Alternatively, is the new Nucleus One better/faster than my Nucleus B? Maybe I should just do that. Please advise. (I can move the 2TB music SSD into the One, right?)
We do have a step-by-step on how to install ROCK RoonOS (which is the proper step in this case) in which we’d then flash the NucleusOS to the machine on our end.
Here is a link to the KB:
If your current Nucleus setup handles your music library and DSP needs well, the Nucleus One is generally not a dramatic upgrade; it’s more of a modern, cost-effective alternative.
If you’re using a basic Nucleus for small-to-medium libraries and mostly PCM playback, Nucleus One will feel snappy and efficient-many users report it’s much faster and simpler to manage.
If you have heavy DSP usage or very large libraries (>100,000 tracks), and want hassle-free performance, consider the higher-tier Nucleus Titan or a desktop with more horsepower instead.
OK t got the SSD specs with AI; Is this right? Do I replace this or the chip on the left (under the red wire) and if so, what are the specs so I can get the right SSD this time?
OK, the new SSD chip is installed. In the article link you sent, there’s a part “” After replacing the SSD, please follow the instructions in this article to reinstall the Roon OS. This process will install the ROCK version of the operating system on your Nucleus device." but the link goes to a dead page. Is there a proper updated page that explains next steps for the Nucleus?
Do I need to install BIOS or does BIOS live on another chip? If so, do I need the Intel or the Asus BIOS? I plugged it and get the message Reboot and Select Proper Boot device. Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key
Ignore the BIOS update. Your Nucleus worked before, so the BIOS is fine.
(This info was for older NUCs (not Nucleus) that were released with a BIOS issue. Roon Labs should delete that from the article or add the info for which models it applied)
OK, I downloaded roonbox-linuxx64-nuc4-usb-factoryreset-100000258.img and then using Balena put it on a USB thumb drive. I used F2 to get to the Intel Visual BIOS screen in Nucleus and moved USB: Generic flash to the #1 top spot. Saved and exited. Tried this a few times but only get the Roon startup screen and then single white horizontal line at the top of the monitor. Nucleus does not now respond to the keyboard (e.g. CtrlAltDel to reboot.). Not sure how to proceed…
If I manually restart without the thumb drive in place I get the text below (cut a bit at the edge because of nucleus-to-monitor mismatch)
What you are showing to us on those screenshots indicates that it could not start loading the OS installer from the USB which likely means that the image was not properly burnt to the USB stick.
Please try to write an OS image to the stick again using this instruction:
4.1. Creating the Bootable USB Drive with Etcher
The downloaded image file can’t just be copied to a USB drive. You need to use a special tool to “flash” it, which makes the drive bootable. We recommend using BalenaEtcher because it’s reliable, free, and works on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Download and install Etcher: Go to the BalenaEtcher website and download the application for your operating system.
Flash the Image:
Open Etcher.
Click "Flash from file" and select the rock-installer-x64-...img.gz file you just downloaded.
Click "Select target" and choose your USB flash drive. Be very careful to select the correct drive, as this process will erase it completely.
Click "Flash!" and wait for the process to complete.
After that please try to load the Nuc again from that usb stick and let us know whether it works.
In case during the image flashing process you’ll spot any errors please send them to us.
Still stuck… Tried again this morning with a new/largerUSB drive. Formatted it to Mac format. Launched Belana Etcher and loaded the .img which went smoothly through validate to complete without a hiccup. Restarted the Nucleus with the new USB (now listed as a 3.0) Once again I get the Roon splash screen, then a short white line top left of screen which goes away after a couple of minutes. Did something else for an hour and for giggles I again restarted the Nucleus. Got the menu this time :-). Went through the menu, removed the USB when instructed, rebooted and for 30 minutes I now have WELCOME TO GRUB! Now booting A, attempt 1. Waited a bit more; restarted and now it says booting A, attempt 2. Not showing in Roon App. So then I tried rerunning the USB. Now I get Failed to reboot when flipping back to B. Roon OS and the previous version installed both refuse to boot. You willl need to manually process using the USB. installer. Hiit Enter to reboot. (tried a few cycles with USB in and USB out but now it always goes to this message.)
OK that was a lot of work- problems with Balena (got it working on a 3rd USB stick to redo above steps), so much ambiguity (like one step says to follow the strraightforward prompts, which despite being not stupid I got one wrong..). Glad it’s working again although now I need to figure out if "the file must be called ffmpeg and must live in the /Data/Codecs/ directory in your Roon OS’s network share " is something I need to figure out… And ARC is broken. But basic Roon is back.
