Roon on Macbook keeps losing connection with Naim Uniti Star

Core Machine (Operating system/System info/Roon build number)

Mac OS Catalina 10.15.5 (and previous versions) / Roon Version 1.7 (build 555)

Network Details (Including networking gear model/manufacturer and if on WiFi/Ethernet)

Netgear Orbi - Naim Connected via ethernet cable. Macbook connected wirelessly, however was previously connected via ethernet and I had the same issue.

Audio Devices (Specify what device you’re using and its connection type - USB/HDMI/etc.)

Naim Uniti Star, connected via ethernet. System Version 3.4.0.4492. Build Version 5671, OS Version 3.4.0.883. No updates available.

Description Of Issue

The Roon endpoint on the Naim Uniti keeps disappearing from the Roon software. This can happen when I am both playing music, and also when music is not playing (the software has just been left open on my laptop). It never automatically re-appears. I have to close and restart Roon on my Macbook for the Roon endpoint to come back.

The other endpoints on the Roon (Chromecast and Airplay) are still visible and available in the Roon software, so it is specifically the Roon endpoint which keeps disappearing.

It seems to be intermittent, but generally will do this at least once or twice a day. My Macbook does not lose connectivity with anything else.

Given that the other endpoints continue to show up, if this does turn out to be a networking issue, then there is clearly a bug in the software as the other endpoints are being re-discovered on any network issue, but the roon endpoint never recovers without restarting the application.

Please can you advise/help?

Have done this to the Orbi setup

Netgear Orbi Routers

If you’re making use of an Orbi router, we recommend unchecking Disable IGMP Proxying in your router’s settings. This setting can interfere with the ability for Roon Remotes to connect to the Roon Core.

Hi Ged,

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll give it a try.

Regards,
Gary

So unfortunately this solution didn’t work. I have double checked my Orbi and “Disable UGMP Proxying” is still unchecked. My roon software has disconnected a couple of times over the past week or so. Not as much as it was doing, but I have also had an update to Mac OS in the meantime, so this may also be playing a part somewhere.

@Roon - need some help here as I suspect this could be a bug. At the very least, it should be re-connecting gracefully. I cant see this being an issue with my Naim, as when I restart Roon, my Naim device is back available.

Hello @Gary_Kellett, thanks for your report! Are you able to reproduce this issue while connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot or something outside of your network? Also, have you updated to 571 since your initial report? Or tried the Ethernet connection again since disabling IGMP proxying?

Hi @nuwriy,

Yes I am on build version 571.

I cant take my laptop, naim and speakers to a different network and keep them playing on the off-chance that Roon will lose connection.

My point here is, regardless of any network connection issues, Roon should re-connect back to my Naim properly. I can see in the log files it is trying to do so, but for some reason it cannot. Given that I an experienced software engineer, I understand networks somewhat and believe I have tried all I can from a network level.

Could we stick the actual issue:
Roon disconnects.
When I restart Roon the connection is back (nothing is done on my Naim or network here)

This means that whatever Roon is doing when trying to reconnect to my Naim - I can see it trying to reconnect in the log file - it isnt getting to my Naim. Perhaps it is caching one or more of the connection settings, so if my Naim was given a new IP Address (DHCP) then maybe it is no longer at the same address? I dont know exactly - your software could be caching all sorts of network details.

All I know is that whatever code is running when it is trying to reconnect is not successful.
But when I then restart roon (which would clear anything that is in memory) then the connection is available again. Perhaps it is scanning for the device at start-up, but not when trying to reconnect. Perhaps a rescan should be done if the connection is lost?

Hope this is helpful and hopefully you can see now why I believe this is a software bug - even if there is an issue on my network then your team can make Roon better for its users by fixing this.

Many thanks
Gary

Hello @Gary_Kellett, thanks for this trace! I showed this thread to our QA team and they notice not only RAAT disconnecting, but also your Chromecast device. Generally, we see this behavior when the network stack on the device in question is having issues. Have you contacted the manufacturer about this to see if they can offer any insight?

Hi @nuwriy,

No I haven’t contacted the manufacturer. And again I’ll reiterate why…

When I restart Roon (without doing anything else on my Naim or Network) the connection is re-established by your software.

So why can’t your software re-establish connection without me restarting it? If you can answer this then I will have something more tangible to go back to the manufacturer with.

Just to add the Apple play endpoint on the roon remains available and I can play through this by switching zones on Roon - just not the RAAT endpoint.

Many thanks
Gary

Hi @nuwriy,

Do you have any updates for me on why it may not be possible for the Roon software to re-connect to the RAAT endpoint on my Naim without me restarting the Roon application?

Again, just to clarify, my Naim is still connected to the network and I can see the Apple Airplay connection within Roon, and when I restart Roon (without doing anything else on the network or on my Naim), it reconnects to the RAAT endpoint on my Naim without any problems.

To clarify my level of expertise here - I have been developing software for over 20 years. This sounds very much like a software issue in Roon.

I cannot simply go to Naim and say Roon keeps losing connection, but when I restart Roon it reconnects - if I was to say the opposite to you - “Roon keeps losing connection to my Naim, but when i restart my Naim, it Roon reconnects” you would tell me to speak to Naim.

I am happy to help and provide more detailed log files if these are available somewhere or do whatever is required, but I need some support here. If you cant give me some support on a product I have paid for, I will not be renewing my subscription. This would be a real shame, but not having any sort of response for 13 days is not acceptable to me, as a paying customer.

I look forward to hearing from you so we can get to the bottom of the problem.

Many thanks
Gary

Hi again @nuwriy ,

Just including @dylan as he was involved in this post I found from last year:

This looks like exactly the same problem - Roon on Macbook connecting to a RAAT endpoint. Different device (Deviant, not a Naim).

This is all pointing to a software problem and not a problem with Naim

Please don’t make me, as a customer keep searching your support tickets. Please at least try to provide some good customer service here guys

Many thanks
Gary

A post was split to a new topic: Losing connection to Naim Uniti Star

Have the exact same issue.

Post in the support area and give the requested details of your system.

Naim Uniti Star - hard wired to the router - Cat 6 cable
MacBook Air running Roon as a core - Wifi
Using iPhone 12 or iPad mini as remote, or running from the MacBook
Running Roon 1.8 recently installed - all remotes and software is latest
Services: Qobuz and Tidal
Library mapped correctly to SSD attached via USB to the Naim Uniti Start
Running Qobuz direct works, or from SSD

A post was split to a new topic: Naim Nova disappears as a Roon device (but still shows up under AirPlay)
