Roon on Windows 10 Failing to Scan Music Library and Detect Audio Devices (ref#1QHVD4)

How can we help?

· I'm having trouble adding music to my library

Describe the issue

I didn't use Roon on my Win10 computer for some time.
Now I had to install the latest version.
I see that the installation used the storage paths I had before but it has no music.
If I go to a storage (status connected) I can see the directories and change directories but a rescan does nothing.
I tried to add a new local directory. Same, I see the paths and scan the directory but it no reaction.

I also get the message "no audio devices found" on this PC where I can play my files in Windows.

When I close Roon and start again it always starts like the initial start with "Add your music" with a list of my folders already shown.
It continues with "Add a music service" and "Set up your Audio devices" without any audio devices.

I already tried to reinstall as admin user.
I alsos tried to disable Windows Firewall (only one in use).
Best regards

Hello @maxwell ,

Thanks for reaching out with your message.

If you don’t have anything in the old database that you need to preserve, you can try to set the old database aside and generate a new one. I have provided instructions below on how to achieve this:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon + RoonServer (from taskbar area)
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon Server” and “Roon”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old” and “Roon” to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Here is the process outlined from a Windows machine:

All Roon_old on Windows

Thank you for your help.
A backup of the current database also leads to an error.
I could see the paths but i.e. not the import setting.
When I installed the new version the was a part of updating the old database.
It looks like there went something wrong with the upgrade of the database of the old installation.
Roonserver directory is over 7GB.

A fresh installation on the PC works.
Do you see any chance to get my old settings back.
I put in some work to find the settings I like.
Importing the files again would be no problem.

Hey @maxwell,

If this is the case, your best bet would be to start with a fresh database moving forward. You wouldn’t be able to restore any prior saved settings in this case, and you’d need to re-import your local library.

Let me know how it goes!
