Without any change to my setup, Roon has stopped doing any playback from my streaming system. Every time I try to play anything, either via Qobuz or from tracks previously loaded directly onto my Nucleus, Roon skips through about 5 tracks (without starting playback of any), and then displays the error message “Too many failures. Stopping playback.”
My setup is: * Ethernet from Netgear Docsis 3.1 Gigabit cable modem to router * Ethernet from Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 router to Roon Nucleus * USB from the out on Roon Nucleus to USB in on Benchmark DAC 3L * XLR from XLR outs of DAC to XLR ins of Benchmark AHB2 amplifier * SVSound speaker cable from channel 1 and channel 2 outs of AHB2 amplifier to ins of PSB front floor tower speakers * RCA from outs of DAC to ins of SVSound SB4000 subwoofer
This setup has been working fine until last week it stopped working and started producing the error referenced above, without any change to the setup whatever. (I couldn’t seek help until now due to preparing and conducting a performance.)
Interestingly (it seems), I CAN play Roon tracks (either from Qobuz or from my Nucleus) over the AudioEngine HD3 speakers connected to my PC via USB. I can do this using either the Roon app on my PC, or the Roon app on my iPad. However, if I try to play to my Benchmark DAC 3L using either the Roon app on my PC or the Roon app on my iPad, the same error message appears and nothing plays.
In attempts to solve the issue without success, I have rebooted every device in my streaming setup, including the modem, router, Nucleus, DAC, and amplifier. I have also updated (today) the Roon app on both my iPad and my PC, again without success in solving the problem.
I am stumped as to how to solve this, and would appreciate help.
In case it matters, I have Roon backups made every day at 4:00 a.m. on a Samsung T7 SSD connected via USB directly to my Nucleus. Also in case it matters, the Roon app shows the IP address of my Nucleus as the following: ::ffff:192.168.1.5. I do not remember seeing the ::ffff: previously, though I could be wrong about that.
One other note: I worked with the Benchmark people, and I believe we ruled out that this problem could be with my DAC or amplifier. I connected my laptop to the DAC—and used a different USB cable in case the one in place had developed a problem—and the system plays music from my laptop through the Benchmark devices to the speakers just fine. The Benchmark support expert believes the problem has to be something that set itself wrong in Roon.
Sorry can’t help you out. But remove your email address from your topic. Roon and its users only respond through this forum.

Yes, all my testing used Roon. In particular, Roon is the only way I have to play tracks I have loaded onto my Nucleus, and I tested not such tracks and tracks from Qobuz (also via Roon)
To verify that my DAC, amp, and associated cables were not the problem, I also played a track from a CD on my laptop external CD drive, plugging the laptop into my DAC. That played through my DAC, amp, and speakers just fine, so I don’t believe they are the problem.
Official support is Mon through Fri, and they can look at your logs to see what might be happening in the background. I am a fellow user and that is what I would look at first to get an idea of what might be happening.
Until then, I would double check to see if there is a USB 1.1 vs USB 2 switch on the Benchmark. You want it to be on USB 2.0.
Rugby, you are on to something, but I’m not sure what. I followed the Benchmark DAC manual instructions for being sure the DAC was set to USB 2.0 (which it was before this started), and the front panel lights show correctly for 2.0. Now when I try to play a track from my Nucleus, I do not get the “too many failures” message, and Roon shows the track playing. That’s progress. But no sound comes through (volume is not too low). I’m still stumped. Does that suggest anything to you?
TO ROON TECH SUPPORT: I would really appreciate the courtesy of a reply and some help from Roon’s tech support staff. This is now the third business day (and fifth day) since I requested help, but I have received nothing but radio silence from Roon tech support staff. I understood that we were assured that the buy-out of Roon was not going to reduce support - is that no longer the case? I need your help. Sincerely, David (lifetime Roon member)
rugby, I have verified that my Benchmark DAC is in USB 2.0 mode. I’ve followed the Benchmark instructions for setting USB to 2.0. And the Signal Path in Roon says Benchmark DAC USB Audio 2.0. When I followed your suggestion to reset the DAC to be sure it is in 2.0 mode, Roon stopped giving me the “too many failures, stopping playback” error message, and Roon now SHOWS a track playing. But there is no sound (I’ve rebooted all the devices and checked all the cables). Do you have any other suggestions?
Some additional system info in case it helps support. My Roon Operating System shows OK, version 1.0 (build 259) production. My Roon Server Software shows OK, version 2.0 (build 1368) production. My Internal Music Storage shows OK. My Roon Labs Software shows OK, version 1.0 (build 15) production. My Roon Database & Settings shows OK.
I see one thing that seems possibly anomalous: In the Roon Web Interface, the IP address of my Roon Nucleus shows as 192.168.1.5, which is correct. That is also the case in the Roon app on my PC, under General. But in the Roon app on my iPad—the normal way I run Roon—under General, SOMETIMES the Nucleus IP address shows as ::ffff:192.168.1.5. The ::ffff: seems possibly wrong, and I don’t know what it means, but I don’t see any way to edit it out. Can anyone shed light on that?
No sound when Roon plays - may need to edit Nucleus IP address and don’t know how
I’m getting no sound when Roon shows it is playing a track from my Nucleus Roon Server over my main Benchmark DAC 3L audio zone. I play that zone using the Roon App on my iPad. I also get no sound from that zone if I use the Roon web app on my Windows 10 desktop.
I asked for help—see Ref#3281DK—on this issue, and on the related problem that Roon was not playing any tracks and giving me the error message “Too many failures, stopping playback”, on Thursday February 29, five working days and seven calendar days ago. HOWEVER, I HAVE RECEIVED ONLY RADIO SILENCE FROM ROON TECH SUPPORT. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE A PROMPT RESPONSE TO THIS REQUEST FROM ROON TECH SUPPORT.
I do get sound if I direct Roon to play from my Nucleus to my desktop speakers zone, using either my iPad Roon App or the desktop Roon web app — both will play sound over the desktop speakers.
I suspect that one problem could be that my iPad Roon App shows a possibly corrupted IP address for my Nucleus which acts as my Roon Server. It shows the Nucleus IP address as ::ffff:192.168.1.5. Until this problem started without me making any changes to my system, the Nucleus address always showed as only 192.168.1.5. That address is still the address that shows for the Nucleus using my desktop Roon Web App and using Setup > Find Roon OS. Screenshots of both are attached. (However, as noted above, even though the desktop Roon OS under Setup shows only 192.168.1.5, the desktop also plays no sound through my Benchmark DAC audio zone.)
I suspect that I may need to edit and correct the Nucleus IP address seen in my iPad Roon App. However, I have no idea how to do that. It could of course also be that the problem has a different cause.
I have already taken the following steps to try to fix this issue: * rebooted every device in my streaming setup, including the modem, router, Nucleus, DAC, and amplifier. * updated the Roon app on both my iPad and my PC. * attached a laptop to my Nucleus via USB, and successfully played a CD track over the Nucleus to my Benchmark DAC audio zone. This shows that my DAC, amplifier, and speakers are all functioning correctly. * tried a different USB cable from the Nucleus to the DAC, in case the cable in place had somehow failed. Both the old and new USB cables played the CD track over the Nucleus to the DAC without a problem. * verified that the Benchmark DAC is set to use USB 2.0. USB 2.0 shows both on the DAC and in the sound path for the DAC when a track is playing (see next paragraph) * checked that all cables are securely connected. *verified that neither the DAC or the amplifier are muted.
Interestingly, after I followed a fellow user’s suggestion (the only help I’ve received in 7 days) to reset the DAC to be sure it is in 2.0 mode, Roon stopped giving me the “too many failures, stopping playback” error message that was the main subject of Ref#3281DK. Roon now SHOWS a track playing. But there is no sound coming over my main audio zone, the Benchmark DAC.
I’m a lifetime Roon member, and it is very frustrating to have Roon fail to play, and get no Roon tech support response for five working days on how to get Roon working again. ROON TECH SUPPORT, I NEED YOUR HELP.
::ffff: is a subnet prefix for IPv4 (32 bit) addresses that are placed inside an IPv6 (128 bit) space. IPv6 is broken into two parts, the subnet prefix, and the interface suffix. Each one is 64 bits long, or, 4 groups of 4 hexadecimal characters.
In other words, it is an IPV6 rendered IPV4 IP. I think Apple uses IPV6 which is why you are seeing it there.
Thanks, Rugby. I don’t really understand that at all well :). I thought that IPv6 and IPv4 related mainly to Roon ARC, which I haven’t been able to get working. I also don’t understand why ::ffff: suddenly started showing up when this problem arose - I’m pretty sure it wasn’t there before
Not really anything to do with Roon specifically. Those are the protocols that run your network and the internet. Everything on the network/internet needs a unique one, think of it as the device’s home street address.
Hi, Menzies. Thanks for reaching out. I have connected my laptop to the Nucleus using an HDMI cable from the laptop to HDMI A on the Nucleus. But I don’t know how to “see” the Nucleus on my laptop screen. Can you advise how to do that? Best, David
When I put the Nucleus IP address 192.168.1.5 into the URL bar of my Safari browser, I get taken to the Roon System Status screen. Everything shows as “OK” there, and the IP address shows as 192.168.1.5, without the ::ffff: preceding it. However, in the Roon App on my iPad, when I go to Settings > General I see the Roon Server Nucleus as ::ffff:192.168.1.5
I have wondered whether I should reinstall the Roon Operating System, which shows as 1.0 (build 259) production, and shows OK, or whether I should restart the Roon Server Software, which shows as 2.0 (build 1368) production, and shows OK. But I haven’t done that for fear of possibly causing additional issues.
