Roon playback stops mid-track and doesn't advance to next track (ref#91BG3W)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

Tell us what's going on

· Roon keeps stopping at the end of a track or midway through a track. When it happens at the end of a track, Roon looks as though it is still playing but it never moves on to the next track in the playlist. This has happened streaming with both Qobuz and Tidal. I have included a log file of when this last happened. If you search for "Right To Be Wrong - Joss Stone", you will see at some point it pauses. I have to restart the track and then later it stops. When it stops and I try to restart it, my Roon screen on my phone (which I am using to control it) goes blank for a while as if Roon is restarting. This has been happening for the last couple of months. I thought it was a Qobuz issue due to the ongoing known problems with Qobuz. I finally got fed up with it, disabled Qobuz and signed up with Tidal. However, the problem started happening almost straight away with Tidal.

Tell us about your home network

· Router is Netgear Nighthawk RAX50. I have varoius devices connected including Raspberry Pi (wired), JBL 4329p (wired), Chromecast audio (wifi).

The above screen shots show the problem of Roon stopping at the end of a track and not advancing to the next track. I’ve tried to attach the log showing what is happening but it doesn’t seem to let me attach a text file. So here are some screen shots of the log file, It shows the track stuck at “[PLAYING @ 5:43/5:44] Regular Pleasures - Patricia Barber”

Same issue.
Playing from Tidal. At first I thought its a specific time before the end it stops however its not - varying form 12 seconds - 30 seconds.

Hi @Robin_Morgan,

Thanks for the update, and for confirming that you are seeing the same behavior with Tidal as well. That lines up with what we found in the logs.

According to the logs, your computer hosting Roon Server is rendering the audio stream more slowly than real-time playback requires. To confirm whether that is the cause here, please disable Sample Rate Conversion and any other Signal Processing, then try playback again.

Please let us know whether the track still stops stuttering after that test.

The only processing I had was Sample Rate Conversion for the JBL 4329’s. I turned this off but still got the problem of Roon stopping. Attached is a screen print of the log file showing Roon "[Playing @ 3:19/5:11] Call Me The Breeze - Lynyrd Skynyrd”. Then it seems to loose connection to the Raspberry Pi and stops.

I have now tried ungrouping my devices and playing to them separately. I have had a stream playing to the JBLs for 12 hours today without any stoppages. At the same time a separate stream playing to the Raspberry Pi without any stoppages. Is the problem related to grouping zones?.

Hey @Robin_Morgan,

Thanks for the follow-up and additional information! Based on the analysis of your Roon Server logs, the issue is directly related to network synchronization within your grouped zones.

The logs confirm that when your devices are grouped, the system encounters critical timing errors that force Roon to “kill” the stream to prevent playback from drifting out of sync.

First, lets investigate the Raspberry Pi Connection:

  • Even though it is wired, ensure it is not connected via a secondary switch or a powerline adapter, as these often introduce the jitter seen in your logs.
  • Try replacing the Ethernet cable or the port on your Netgear Nighthawk RAX50 to rule out a hardware fault at the Pi's endpoint.
If that doesn’t help, test out adjusting Resync delay:
  • Go to Settings > Audio and select Device Setup for both the Raspberry Pi and the JBLs.
  • Increase the Resync Delay (try 500ms or 1000ms) to give the devices more time to stabilize their buffers when a track starts or changes.
I’d also consider testing out setting a different "Clock Master":
  • When grouping, Roon picks one device to be the "leader." Try creating the group in a different order (e.g., select the JBLs first, then add the Pi) to see if using the JBL as the clock master improves stability.
Lastly, if none oft he above help: Log into your router and ensure IGMP Snooping is enabled. This helps manage the multicast traffic Roon uses for device discovery and synchronization.
  • Disable Airtime Fairness if it is enabled, as this can prioritize high-speed devices in a way that disrupts the steady, low-latency stream required for audio sync.
We’ll be monitoring for your reply results, thank you!

As a starting point I have set everything back to how it was. The only difference now is that a new release of Roon has installed, Roon Server version 2.6.5 (build 1653). I’ve been running Roon for hours at a time (about 8 on 1 day) over the last few days and the problem has not reoccurred. I note that the release notes for the latest release indicate “that means better efficiency, reduced memory usage”. Could this have “fixed” the problem? I did feel that the problem had come in after a new release installed sometime earlier in the year but got sidetracked by the whole Qobuz thing. I will continue to monitor.
