Roon playing 96k/24bit track at half speed (ref#XD2SCL)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· When I play a 96k/24bit track Roon plays it at what sounds like ‘half speed’?

Tell us about your home network

· My router is a Sky unit. My system is all Meridian. My music is stored on a QNAP and I have a Roon Nucleus.

Hi @Peter_Goodman,

It sounds like Roon and DAC capabilities are not synced correctly.

As a troubleshooting step I’d recommend rebooting the Roon Nucleus and then Meridian device you are streaming to.

Hope this helps.

Hello @Peter_Goodman ,

Thanks for reaching out. Can you please confirm:

  1. Does this issue happen across multiple audio endpoints, even on System Output on a PC or HDMI output on the Nucleus, for example?
  2. Is there any pattern to the types of contact impacted? Local and streaming? Just 96khz content?
  3. Can you please let us know the exact local time + date + track when you next observe this issue? We’ll enable diagnostics to see if there are further clues in the logging.

Thanks for your prompt response. In answer to your queries:

  1. The problem appears to be only when I play 96khz/24bit material through my main system in my cinema room. It works fine through my 2 MS200 outputs and also through my MacBook speakers. In the cinema room the music is played through my Reference Digital Surround Controller 861 and then through a Meridian UHD 722 HDMI unit to my Meridian 7200 front, 5200 centre, and 3100 rear speakers. It has worked fine in the past.
  2. At 16:54 13th December I tried to play track 3, ‘Come talk to me’ from Peter Gabriel’s album ‘Back To Front Live In London 22.10.2013’. Same problem of sounding like it’s half normal speed.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards
Peter

Hey @Peter_Goodman,

Thanks for sharing the above information! We were able to read a fresh diagnostic report from your Nucleus at the time you’ve mentioned, and it seems like Roon thinks playback timing is normal - there’s nothing odd happening within the Nucleus itself, and so I believe the problem is downstream, maybe clocking or sample-rate mismatch.

When you have your Cinema zone selected, could you share a screenshot of the audio settings?

Roon is decoding FLAC at 96 kHz and sending PCM flagged as 96 kHz - can you confirm your DAC is matching these settings?

Thank you!

Hi Benjamin

Thanks for your response but I don’t know how to access the information you require? When you ask for a screenshot of the audio settings do you mean the information you can bring up when playing a track? How do I check that my DAC is matching the required settings?

Hi @Peter_Goodman,

In Roon, enable your zone, then click the volume button followed by the cogwheel to access your Device Settings:

You’ll also want to check your DAC settings, specifically on the DAC itself - feel free to share the make and model and we can likely help you here as well. Although it’s always best to reach out to the manufacturer directly if you are unsure on how to access settings of the product.

We’ll be monitoring for your reply!

OK, here is the screenshot of the Device Settings you asked for. Regarding the DAC I guess this is the ID40 card which is in my Meridian 861 music processor? I have no idea how you access the details you have asked for. One other thing I notice is that there is background noise whenever I play any track. If I pause the track the noise stops after a few seconds?

Good day @Peter_Goodman !

Сan you please tap on “Device Setup” option from your screenshot and share a photo from there ?

Also, can you please clarify, if you limit the sample rate to 48k, does it sound normally ?

Thanks !

Regards.

Hi Alex

Please see screenshot of the “Device Setup” as requested. I do not now how to 'limit the sample rate to 48k" so could you explain how to do this?

Regards

Good day @Peter_Goodman !

In order to convert the sample rate from 96 Khz to 48 you can open the signal path and proceed to Muse as on the screenshot below:

There please enable sample rate conversion like this:

And switch “Sample rate conversion” option to “Custom” value:

In your case please choose manually 96 khz to 48 conversion:

After that please let us know whether it changes playing behavior.

Thanks!

Regards.

Thanks Alex, I have changed it as advised and yes, it is now playing normally.

Regards
Peter
