Describe the issue

When using Roon Radio with grouped playback the audio stops playing at the end of the current track often, the upcoming track pop up shows but it doesnt play and the interface is not showing paused

Describe your network setup

ISP is Mercury NZ, hard wired core and speakers, Unifi router and AP

Hi @Paul_Bellamy,

What kind of grouped Zone are you playing to in this screenshot (Chromecast, Airplay, Roon Ready, etc.?)

From your last report, these were KEF speakers using Chromecast. If that’s still the protocol here, it’s worth noting that the team has a constellation of tickets in the pipeline to stabilize issues with Cast, which might affect this.

Can you share a screenshot of the Signal Path when this issue occurs?

Hi @connor

I gave up on Chromecast.

This is Roon Ready on both sets of speakers.

This is a screenshot of the signal path for one pair of speakers during playback whole grouped.

Just happened again at 10:34 am

Hello @Paul_Bellamy

We’ve discussed this with our senior QA and development teams. The team is investigating some possibilities here and, as soon as that investigation is complete, we’ll be sure to follow up ASAP.

In the meantime, would you kindly test the same group playback without any sound enchantment?

You have our apologies for the trouble here, and we’ve greatly appreciated your patience as we continue investigating this tricky issue. We’ll be in touch as soon as we can.

Hi @vadim

Sorry I have been on holiday. Do you mean no MUSE or no processing on the KEF side or both?

Hi @Paul_Bellamy,

Ideally no processing for both, if possible. Thank you!

Hi @Paul_Bellamy,

We’ve pinpointed some of the transition failures and dropouts you’ve described over the last few weeks in logs.

We see multicast storms causing a huge amount of network discovery traffic, and then network reset events prompt RoonServer to reestablish its connection to Roon Remotes.

Around this same time, Roon will either receive a teardown from the KEF mid-track or in between tracks. Roon then reconnects to the device to reinitiate a handshake, and playback is stopped.

What is the actual network pathway between these two KEF speakers and your Roon Server machine? Do you have multiple mesh nodes in between?

Hi @connor

The speakers and Roon Server are all hardwired to the same Ubiquiti router, there isn’t much else connected to the router, just an Apple TV and a wireless AP.

Hello @Paul_Bellamy ,

Thanks for that confirmation. I wonder, does this issue also occur if you play to each of those zones individually?

As for the multicast storm hypothesis, can you please check to see if you have an IGMP Snooping or IGMP Proxying setting on your Unifi router? If so, does that trigger any change in behavior if enabled?

Hi @noris

Sorry for the late reply, I’m very busy at the moment. I dont see IGMP snooping, IGMP proxying is enabled.

No issues playing to zones individually.

Hello @Paul_Bellamy

Thanks, that helps. We have gone through your latest logs alongside the earlier set, and there is one thing we need from you before anything else.

Across the whole log window, from 20 July to 6 August, we found only one session where you played to the grouped zone, on 5 August between 9:26 and 9:37 in the morning. That session ran cleanly through three track transitions with no stalls. However, it was not Roon Radio, and Roon Radio to a grouped zone is the exact scenario you are reporting. So we have not yet captured the failure in the logs we have.

What would help most is a deliberate test. Please could you:

  1. In your UniFi settings, turn IGMP Proxying off. On a single flat network like yours it is not normally needed, and it is a plausible source of the multicast traffic we saw earlier.
  2. Restart your Roon Server.
  3. Start Roon Radio playing to the grouped zone and let it run through several track transitions.
  4. Note the exact date and time if it stalls, and also note the times if it runs cleanly for a while. Both are useful.

Then let us know either way and we will pull fresh logs.

One correction to something from your last message. You mentioned no issues playing to zones individually, but our logs show repeated stalls on 28 July in the Living Room zone on its own, playing “Lonesome Tears” by Beck, where playback froze and resumed eight times over about twenty minutes. It is possible you did not notice it at the time, but it means the problem is not strictly limited to grouped playback, and that is useful for us to know.

Two smaller things while you are in the settings:

Please could you send a screenshot of Settings, then Networks, then your LAN network, showing the advanced or multicast section. IGMP Snooping lives there rather than in the general router settings, and the layout changes between UniFi versions, so we would rather see it than guess.

And we never got the result of the earlier test with all processing disabled, both MUSE on our side and any processing on the KEF side. If you tried it before your holiday, please let us know what happened.

Hi @vadim

Thanks for your reply.

I have disabled MUSE but I didnt want to change any KEF settings as I have those setup nicely and there is no simple on off switch, so I would just be changing to different settings really rather than disabling anything.

It turns out IGMP proxy was actually already off.

Im not sure where you want me to go to check for IGMP snooping. Here is a screenshot of my router settings. I dont see any LAN settings per se.

I will run some more tests with Roon radio and get back to you.

Hi @vadim No issues over quite a number of tracks this morning. I then re-enabled MUSE and the issue came back quite quickly at 9:45 NZST at the end of “The Police - Desert Rose”

Hi @vadim Again at 9:49 at the end of “Sarah McLachlan - Angel”
