Roon Radio makes Roon Client on MacOS slow/irresponsive

Roon Core Machine

Roon Core is running on an Arch Linux VM *(fully dedicated to Roon) inside proxmox, on top of an intel 13900k
VM has access to 4 CPU cores, and 8GB of RAM.

Roon Client is running on a Mac Studio M1 Ultra with 64GB of RAM.

Networking Gear & Setup Details

My networking setup is fully wired, Unifi UDM Pro as router.

Connected Audio Devices

KEF LSX

Number of Tracks in Library

Description of Issue

Hey folks!

So, i’ve been experiencing this for a year, if not more, but only now took the time to actually come here and seek help.

Roon performs ok when I open up, pick an album, hit play; as soon as the album ends and Roon Radio starts, It becomes irresponsive, I maximize the window and every action results in a few seconds of halts until it reacts, as soon as I effective pause Roon Radio, performance resumes.

I’ve replicated this issue on this Mac, on a previous M1 Mac Mini, and I’ve also run core on both linux machines and a spare mac mini, it doesn’t seem to be hardware related, more like platform (the Mac client is still poorly optimized for the platform).

Is this a known issue?

Thanks for taking the time to write in, and you have my extreme apologies for the delay in getting to your thread. While wait times have been a big longer than usual, this is no excuse. Please know I’ll do my best to make sure nothing like this happens again.

The first thing to note, is that running Roon on a VM is outside the scope of our support, so unfortunately I won’t be able to much much in that area. I’d suggest moving your core device to one of your mac devices while we troubleshoot.

With that, if you could please recreate this issue (after moving cores) and share the specific date and time, as well as track name, when the issue occurs?

Do you know if this issue is tied to file resolution at all? Can you test out playing a few different file types to see if this is all at play?
