We are led to believe that Roon gives us the true window on the audio signal path from pc to DAC/amp but really how true is this when there seems to be a disparity with some devices DSP processes not showing up in Roon’s signal path, where others show warts and all.
Is the declaration of this just at the discretion of the vendor and not actually a requirement to get certification or is this purely a limit of certain hardware to report it? Either way it’s not being transparent which is a Roon USP. How many other devices are hiding this?
Some Wiim devices do not show their DSP actions, including its digital volume level in Roon’s signal path. They recently added peq and room correction again none of this shows up in the signal path on my Wiim Pro Plus. Not sure if this is the same for Amp or Ultra but I would not be surprised if it is.
Also there seems to be a growing trend of devices being able to mimic another certified device to allow Roon to work whilst they get certification. This surely is making a mockery of the process. Eversolo did it, I believe FiiO are doing it with the SR11 which appears as a M17. I know this is bad actors here and necessarily Roon but it looks bad.
Interesting musings Simon
I seem to remember a couple of vendors who could not get Roon certification due to lack of visibility of the full signal path. Then when Cambridge Audio broke Roon Ready I asked support about continued certification of devices after they were through the Roon Ready programme and was told it was a one time thong that isn’t followed up on. So pass certification and then make enhancements to your system once you are over the line and all is fine
I remember that Roon were very upset with Eversolo, so it’s strange if others are now doing it and getting away with it. Is this not a scenario where Roon Bridge would suffice until RR is achieved, which is the route that the Zen Stream took.
Wiims volume control is standard across the range from launch so no excuses for it being after getting RR status.
No as Roon Bridge is a legitimate way for linux distros as long as its not shipped and a user option to downlood and install from Roons servers. The ifi is running a linux distro much like a pi , these devices are Android and thus no Bridge this is using RR and advertising a different device.
No arguments from me, but iFi moved from Roon Bridge to Roon Ready about 18 months after release, which I don’t remember seeing before.
Roon Bridge was also shipped with the device, so there seems to be some latitude here even if it isn’t necessarily planned or agreed by Roon
You sure it didn’t download and then installed this is how it works on volumio and it used that as its base did it not? It’s against licensing to ship with it installed.
Well it could possibly have done that as it booted up and connected to the Internet. But Roon only is a mode with a dedicated hardware switch dial, so that would be weird, but possible.
So Auralic are at this now making the s1
Appear as a mini as it’s struggling to get RR status on its own. This is really taking the **** out of the RR programme.
