I use convolution filters in Roon to tame a large 40hz room resonance, which works well. But how to incorporate my now-restored Garrard 401?
Roon Ready Relay looks ideal, but other than the Victrola announcements things have been quiet since launch nearly 18 months ago.
RooPlay on a RooExtend box or RPi would work I think. Except both devices output to the DAC on USB, and my DAC’s USB input is already taken by my streamer.
Any suggestions?
Good news: the USB conflict isn’t real here — RooPlay works differently than you’re picturing. It’s not an output to your DAC, it’s an input to Roon.
The USB port RooPlay needs is on the rooExtend box (or Pi) acting as host for an ADC that digitizes the phono signal. From there it broadcasts lossless FLAC up to 24/192 to Roon over the network, behaving like an internal radio station. Roon applies your convolution filter, then plays the corrected signal out through your existing streamer→DAC zone — which you never touch. Your DAC’s USB stays with the streamer exactly as it is.
So the chain is:
Garrard 401 → phono stage → USB ADC → rooExtend/Pi (RooPlay) → [network] → Roon Core (your 40Hz convolution) → [network] → existing streamer → DAC → amp
There will be a certain amount of latency, but it’s a trade off for what you’re wanting to do.
That roon relay thing has been a massive disappointment. 18 months and there is basically nothing.
Harman should just buy it license rooExtend and HQplayer.. that would be a real move forward.

Do you know if RRR works the same way, sending music across the network rather than a physical connection. Just directly into Roon rather than the getaround of mimicing a radio station? I’m assuming so.
The Victrola product pages say that they can stream wirelessly (or analog output through RCA)
Just been reading up on this - Dr CWO said yes, RRR works essentially the same as RooPlay, just negating the need to setup a dedicated radio station in Roon.
