Describe the issue

I am running Roon Server on an i5 sonicTransporter. Roon Remote stopped seeing this Roon Server several days ago. This is true of the Roon Remote on my Mac Mini and the Roon Remote on my Android phone.

My Mac Mini M1 network sees the sonicTransporter, and I can access and manage the sonicTransporter via sonicorbiter.com.

Note that I have been running Roon successfully on this sonicTransporter for about 10 years. And I have been running Roon Remote successfully on this Mac Mini for about 5 years.

I just went through all the trouble shooting steps Roon Labs recommends, and my Roon Remotes still cannot see the Roon Server on my sonicTransporter.

I also restarted the Roon Server on my sonicTransporter before completing the Roon Labs troubleshooting steps.

Lastly, my sonicTransporter is running version 2.8.

Describe your network setup

#1 Fiber Optic internet line from Hawaiian Telcom > Modem > Ethernet Output > Netgear Wireless Router | Model: RAXE300 Tri-Band WiFi Router | AXE7800. #2 Netgear Wireless Router > Ethernet > sonicTransporter. #3 Netgear Wireless Router > Ethernet > Mac Mini. #4 Netgear Wireless Router > Wireless > Android Samsung Note 20 phone. #5 Netgear Wireless Router > Ethernet > microRendu Bedroom. #6 Netgear Wireless Router > Ethernet > TP Link Powerline Adapter Bedroom > TP Powerline Living Room > ethernet > microRendu Living Room. NOTE: I unplugged the ethernet cable connecting my wireless router to my TP Link Powerline Adapter Bedroom, and my Roon Remotes are still unable to see the Roon Server on my sonicTransport. I closed and re-opened my Roon Remotes several times after unplugging this ethernet cable, and the Roon Remotes are still unable to see the Roon Server on my sonicTransporter.

Hi @MarkTarone,

Thank you for your post.

Our diagnostics servers see an active RoonServer instance on the Mac Mini, but the SonicTransporter-hosted server has not pinged our servers in at least three days. Have you migrated your RoonServer instance in the meantime?

Please try toggling on multicast forwarding and IGMP snooping in your router admin settings for all of the Netgear routers listed in your topology. Roon’s device discovery cycles rely on multicast traffic, and managed network components sometimes won’t forward multicast in the manner Roon expects.

I recommend ensuring that Roon has local network access in Privacy & Security → Local Network on the MacOS instance. This will only apply to the Mac Mini.

Please also try switching off any settings related to band steering.

We’ll watch for your response. Thank you!

This problem is RESOLVED.

I ran the update for sonicTransporter 2.8 software tonight, and this resolved the problem.

More specifically, last week, I ran the 2.8 software update twice. The first time likely triggered the problem. The second time did not resolve the problem. Tonight, when I ran the update, the problem resolved.

FYI - I followed the FAQ steps provided via: MySonicorbiter

Here is the specific FAQ listing that resolved my issue:

FAQ Listing: “I am having some issues upgrading Roon or after a Roon upgrade”

If you ahe problems like your apps can’t find Roon after and upgrade make sure you do all these stpes. If you miss a step Roon will still be broken.

  1. Upgrade your sonicTransporter to the latest code by pressing the update button. Do this even if you already have Sonicorbiter OS Version 2.8 to make sure you have all the minor fixes.

Detailed instructions on upgrading your sonicTransporter are available Here

2.Make sure your Roon Config is ready by doing the following:
Using a web browser, go to:

sonicorbiter.com → Manage (under Music Servers, next to the sonicTransporter) → Settings → Roon Server

Make sure no checkboxes are selected and press Save Changes (yes press it now)

  1. Upgrade Roon – Roon will probably ask you to update in the Roon app. If not, go into the Roon app and click Settings → About and you can force an update from there.

  2. Update all the Roon apps on phones and tablets. You can use the built-in update system in your phone or tablet to do that.
