Roon Remote conflict

I have Roon Server set up on my Mac Mini. One of the ways I access it is via a networked Macbook Air.

Recently I had to re-install Mac OS on the Macbook Air, and I used the Mini to re-install my files, including of course Roon.

Unfortunately, now when I try to use Roon on the Air, it thinks Roon Server is installed on the Air and doesn’t work.

I have changed the names of both computers, and re-installed Roon on the Air, with no joy.

Is there any way to fix this?

My iOS devices work just fine.

I’m guessing you used Timeshift? This copies the device ID to the new machine, which causes the conflict.

The workaround is to do a backup of Roon on the original machine to a USB drive, then completely remove Roon from the computer. Next, run Timeshift.

Once this is done, restore the Timeshift backup on the new machine, and install Roon from scratch, using the Roon installer. Now start Roon, and when asked to login, click on the Restore from backup link at the bottom of the page.

Once the backup is restored from the USB drive, you should be good to go.

Good day @Steve_Dodds !

What @mjw saying is correct.

Please try to uninstall Roon from the device which used Time Machine to restore backup and install it from scratch.

If after it you still can’t connect to a Mac Mini server from your macbook air please try to deauthorize your Macbook Air as a server and it will allow you to search for a new server in local network.

Have a nice day!

Regards.

I didn’t use Time Machine.

I used the Mac Migration Assistant to transfer my setup from my Mini to my laptop.

I still have Roon set up on a PC so I can deauthorise the Mini and switch to that.

But it would be rather annoying if the only way to fix the problem and keep using the Mini as the server is to delete Roon from the Mini and start again.

When you install Roon on a computer it installs two Roon programs including Roon Server and Roon (client). That’s OK and it’s actually good to have a second Roon server available. (I have four.)

All you need to do is go to Roon - Settings - General and click Disconnect to disconnect from the Macbook Air, then authorize the Mac Mini and unauthorize the Macbook Air.

Finally, go to the Roon ICON on the Macbook Air and right click (I think) and remove the check mark that specifies “Open at login” and close the Roon server program on the Macbook Air. I think these are listed under options.

If you want to test it, Reboot the Macbook Air and make sure the Roon server program is no longer running.

Hello @Steve_Dodds

Thanks for the update and for clarifying how the system was migrated.

At this point, could you please let us know what the current status is on your side?

  • Are you now able to connect to the Mac mini as the Roon Server from your MacBook Air?

If the issue is still present, let us know and we’ll be happy to walk you through the remaining steps to cleanly stop Roon Server on the MacBook Air and ensure it only runs as a Remote.
