It's been very frequent lately that when I open Roon remote on my iPhone, all of the sudden my whole home internet network and wifi goes disconnected (it seems that modem gets reboot automatically). First, I thought it was network or wifi issue with my provider (Bell Canada) but lately, I noticed it's about Roon, it only happens when I open up Roon remote. This is outrages. How could Roon reboot my modem or push network outrage? My setting are as follows: MacBook Pro as Core, connected with Ethernet cable to mesh network pod. iPhone and iPad both connected through wifi (as a Roon remote), RooExtend connected using Ethernet cable to mesh network pod. Software on iOS and Mac are up to date.
Describe your network setup
Bell Hub 3000, with 2 mesh network pods. Ethernet to Mac from one of the pods, Ethernet to rooExtend from the other mesh pod. iPad and iPhone connected to the same wifi network
Roon should not be able to cause such behavior on the network, it sounds like something else is going on here, potentially failing hardware. Roon does do multicast announcements when it starts, and if the modem/router is having issues processing these requests, it is possible that is what you are noticing.
Do all the Roon devices on your network trigger this behavior, including Ethernet-connected ones? Roon doesn’t have any direct connection to your modem from your network setup explanation, so it is very difficult to imagine how it would trigger a modem restart.
Thanks for your reply. My setting are as follows: MacBook Pro as Core, connected via Ethernet cable to mesh network pod. iPhone and iPad both connected through wifi (as a Roon remote), RooExtend connected using Ethernet cable to mesh network pod.
I understand that Roon doesn’t have permission to tamper my network, but I’m wondering why this is only happening when I open up Roon app, and nothing else?
I previously contacted my internet provider, they couldn’t understand what’s happening, they said you might have network congestion due to any devices connected to my network and they offer to send me another mesh pod (currently I have two mesh pods). But I don’t think that’s related to my issue. I never had this issue before.
Thanks for your reply. I understand that you cannot provide support for rooExtend, and I hardly believe that issue relates to rooExtend. @DrCWO I would appreciate if you share your perspective as well (it happens many times in the last few months that when I open Roon remote app on my iPhone, my modem gets restarted)
Today, with my own eyes, I saw once I opened Roon remote app on my iPhone, my modem got restarted (as if I manually restarted the modem).
As for my pods, they are mesh network, so they don’t create additional wifi network but just extend the range of the main modem through mesh network. So all my devices are effectively connected to the same wifi XYZ. I cannot dictate whether a device should use my main modem or pod as it automatically allocated. It’s hard for for to remove the pods because it will rove my wifi coverage through the house.
My network provider replaced my modem 2 times during last month to solve the issue, so I hardly believe the issue relates to modem or my network. I understands this is a novel issue for you, but there should be explanation for why one I open Roon on my iPhone this issue happened??!
Hi @mehdiem,
I never encountered such a thing before with rooExtend. rooExtend talks to your Roon Core via the official Roon API and also fires some https requests to get your location, the time, the date and checking your Liceneses.
I would try to temporally strip down your installation.
Power off all your mesh pods
Connect your Roon Core DIRCTLY (one Ethernet cable ONLY) to your Router.
Use the WiFi of the Router to connect iPhone and iPad.
Now try to reproduce the issue.
If the issue is already present change the Ethernet Cable to a brand new one.
If it works in this configuration please add rooExtend also directly to the Router by ONE Ethernet Cable.
This basic configuration should not create any issues.
Next add one of the mesh pod and retry.
My guess something goes wrong in your mesh network.
I know this causes some work for you and also carrying devices around in your place. But I see no other chance hoe to find out what goes wrong.
I would further investigate any potential hardware-related issues with your Modem as a next step as well - perhaps your ISP can also run hardware diagnostics on the device.
Hello there, as I previously brought to your attention, this is the 3rd modem in the last few months. Network provider also ran diagnostic test each time I called them, and there were no issue shown at their end. I understand based on limited information, your hands are tied, nonetheless, it’s quite unlikely the issue relates to modem, and even if there is issue with the modem…why this only happens when I open Roon on my iPhone and no other app could cause this?
Can you please let us know the exact local time + date when you open Roon and then when you notice the issue occur on the modem? We can activate diagnostics and try to review the logging for anything, I suspect we won’t see much, but it could be worth a try.
Hello. Thank you for your support. I’m from Canada, Toronto, EST. Last time that this happened was last night; April 16th, at around 23:00-23:15. It was once I opened Roon app on my iPad. (Please note than Roon core, iPad app, iPhone app are all updated to latest version); I immediately saw that my modem got restarted .
