For Roon connectivity to work properly, both Roon Server and Roon Remote need to be turned on.
· I can't turn on Roon Server, I need help.
Describe the issue
Roon remotes no longer connecting to Roon ROCK core
Describe your network setup
Roon stopped backing up a couple of weeks ago. It kept saying that the backup drive could not be found, even though nothing had changed, afik. Attempting to force backup results in message: Backup Failed / Backup director not available. Last successful backup was 17 Oct 2024. Fast forward a couple of days, and now my remotes cannot connect to my core at all. Last time this happened, there was a firewall setting that windows changed with an update. I'm not sure what the cause is this time.
Our diagnostic servers indicate that your ROCK is currently offline. If you haven’t already, check the RoonOS Web Administration page to verify the status of your operating system. I recommend rebooting from that page directly.
Please share a screenshot if you see any errors presented.
Please also provide a basic overview of your network topology as relevant to the ROCK. List any network hardware (router, switch, access point) between the Roon controllers, the ROCK itself, and the internet.
Turns out the core running ROCK needed me to type something to get past the boot screen. Since my core doesn’t have a monitor or keyboard connected, it took some time to sort that out (had to buy a corded mouse and keyboard).
Unfortunately, the core is not backing up as of October 17th. Roon can no longer see the computer I’ve been backing up to.
This happened a couple of years ago and I learned from the fine people on this board that it was due to default security settings that were implemented after updating to Windows 11.
Does anyone know if something similar might be happening now?
I added a 1TB internal hard drive to the nuc. Does anyone know how to tell which HD is going bad? I presume it’s the one with the OS, but just want to be sure.
That’s all Greek to me, so it’s nice to have confirmation.
I’ve ordered a replacement (Samsung 970 EV Pro) and will replace it tomorrow. I suppose this will be a good time to move everything to this Akasa Plato I purchased a while back.
As far as the backups failing and not being able to network with my hub computer, I’m sure this is a Windows issue, but I hope someone her can help resolve the problem. The network was stable for a couple of years, then just the backups just stopped, and now I can’t see the ROCK from my main computer.
Regarding the network hardware, I’m using an Asus AC2600 with Audioquest Pearl ethernet cables connecting my Roon ROCK NUC to my other NUC that is used to manage the network and other media.
It looks like Password Protected Sharing was turned back on, likely due to a windows update. I turned it off again and now I’m backing up my core
However, when I navigate to \rock\data (to transfer an album I recently downloaded to my core), the Storage folder shows as empty. I have a ton of music on my core. Any idea where I can find that storage folder?
The Windows 11 24H2 update disabled anonymous (guest/guest) logons on SMB shares, at least on some Windows variants, and affected users are made to dick around in the registry…
Thanks for reaching out. I haven’t tried to move anything to that folder yet, but looking at my library on my remotes, it appears that none of my local storage (on the ROCK) is available. I suspect that either I did a poor job of reinserting that hard drive when I was fiddling with the boot drive, or that drive is also failing. I’ll take the NUC apart today and see if I can get it working again.
I’ve been planning on moving everything to a fanless case, but that’s a project that will have to wait until late December.
