Roon ROCK not appearing on network and login screen clears info (ref#I5VR36)

Tried ‘resetnetwork’ on NUC roon rock connected w keybrd & monitor.
Screen says /192.168.68.51 so its in my network.
Once i did the resetnetwork, system restarted (good) but ip reverted back to 157.131.97 111

Main ipad pro as Remote thats in with 192.168.68.xx has not connected to web UI of any roon ip 192 or 157 since yesterday after assign Static ip to NUC roon MAC in TPlink Deco cell app & static ip in web UI on Dell pc (that’s not on my network) when ip was 157. If not use Dell, cant get to web UI w ip 157.

  1. Why is the Static NUC IP not sticking?
  2. Why would nuc, and my 2 pc (nordvpn) not used normally for roon access, suddenly have their ip address changed?
  3. Been using this setup for years wo any issues. Could roon backup errors constantlt acknowledging and clearing affect this (unlikely)?

Config for resolving issue…
Sonic gigabit modem->
netgear 8-port hub->
master TP.link mesh wifi router &
Nuc roon rock svr connected to netgear hub.

Normally nuc roon is connected directing to back of tp link 2nd wifi node on 3rd fl where music equip located. This had worked well for years.

Really appreciate your help. I just dont understand how the ip address changed on their own…

What model number is the tp-link 8 port Hub? Is is a managed hub? Or is an unmanaged switch? Could it be assigning IPs to the devices connected to it?

For testing I would try simplifying the system as much as possible, turn off the VPN, remove as many many devices as possible.

Can you connect the Rock an open port on the TP-link Decca? for testing. It looks like they have three ports on them.
Another thing to try (if wired connection is not possible) is to enable the WiFi on the Rock OS and see what happens.

Does the nordVPN “assign” IPs to devices to “mask” them? Are there settings to ignore devices? I am not familiar with how NordVPN works. Is it installed on the PCs and therefore only affects the PCs?

IPs might be updated due to timeout/refresh of network settings?

The back-up should not affect your other devices and “should” not mess up the Roon OS.

Hello Bear,
Netgear GS308 unmanaged 8-port gigabit ethernet switch (amazon)
TP-Link AXE5300 Deco Triband mesh wifi 6E (costco) using 1 master hardcabled to netgear with 4 wifi nodes. All working well.

Reconnect nuc directly to master router again along w 2 original bkp harddrives. On ipad pro remote allowed me to do a Restore from my blp drive #1 for A-J.
Now nuc scrn shows correct ip 192.168.68.51 ! On both NUC and ipad Pro Remote!

Still searching for Roon Rock svr for access… not connecting. Tried delete/reinstall Roon Remote on cell.
Still cannot access nuc roon svr.
I feel like we are getting closer…

Of course it does. That’s the purpose of it, after all.

NordVPN standard servers provide security and privacy by encrypting your internet traffic and hiding your personal IP addresses.

If this is Sonic fiber internet that you have, my understanding is that with the Sonic GPON service, there are two separate boxes that you should have. One is the ONT (the optical-to-ethernet box anchored to the wall), and the other is the router/wifi AP (not a modem) that you rent from them. The ONT is not optional, but you should not need to run their router. Someone I know is using their own router and wireless solution with no concerns, and not renting their equipment. Your wireless would be your TP-Link Deco.

If the “Sonic modem” is indeed a router, then you have two networks running which would explain the number of IPs (not the VPN ips) and the different gateways.
What actual model is it?

If you do have Fiber internet try getting rid of the Sonic device and hook the Deco up to the ONT, then the switch up to the deco, etc. Then if this works you could return the Sonic device and not have to rent it from Sonic?

If it’s not Sonic Fiber then:
Is the list you posted the order that they are connected (modem->switch->TP-link Deco)?
If so, the “Sonic modem” would be assigning IPs to everything connected to the switch. Which would explain why the NUC was getting the 157 IP address. Try putting the Deco router first, then the switch (modem->Tp-link Deco->switch). That way the deco gets one address from the modem and the Deco will serve up IPs to the switch that will pass through IPs from the Deco to everything that is connected to it.

Yes, have Sonic Fiber and only their ONT wall box (modem). Even though master TP.link deco router is attached to netgear hub, it has the correct ip 192.168.68.xx. the other 4 wifi connect node routers have ip 192.168.71.xx and devices connecting thru them are are good.

Yes, i have not rented the sonic modem, but i did remove the netgear hub and connected Sonic ONT directly to the master TP.link deco modem 4-5 days ago to test nuc before your suggestion to make nuc ip static.

I can reconnect my msster TP.link router to Sonic ONT and reboot but if my master TP.link router already is has been in the correct network, do you think renting the Sonic modem temporary would help, let me know.

Thanks Bear for all the effort.

Hello Bear,
Thanks again, think I’m understanding more about IP address assignment.
My TP.link router assigned wifi ip range is 192.168.68.xx to 192.168.71.xx

I disconnected my hardcable Dell pc from Netgear hub and now my ip addr is in the 192.168.68.xx correct for my network… so it was the Netgear hub assigning my Dell ip 135.180.213.xx

But nuc roon still not showing under my networked devices after reboot nuc. I will try again to connect sonic modem directly to master TP.link router after power down NUC Roon.

If doesn’t work, and i order the sonic modem:

  1. should i remove the nuc static ip assignment before installing sonic wifi router?
  2. do i disconnect my master TP.link modem temp?
  3. will using the sonic modem change my network ip 192.168.68.xx - 192.168.71 xx range?

No, I don’t think you need the Sonic router.

I would remove static IP from NUC. Put it back into DHCP mode and turn off the WiFi.
I would connect the TP-link Deco directly to the Sonic ONT.
Then connect the TP-link Hub/switch to the TP-link Deco.
Then connect your PCs and the NUC to the tp-link Switch.
Then reboot everything.

The Tp-link Deco “should” get an IP from the fiber ONT and it should assign IPs to all your devices. They “should” all be in the 192.168.68.XXX range.
Except for the ones that you use your NordVPN on?

Ok. Have connected sonic modem directly to master TP.link router. Also have connect nuc roon rock svr to same TP.link router.
Deleted TP.link ip addr reservation for ROCK 192.168.68.51 off TP.link Deco app.

ROCK device showed up as connected device on TP.link app!
But still no Roon Remote access on cell or iPad Pro.
Get “Choose your Roon Server” looks good, click [connect] gets me Roon Login screen.

Tried login on iPad Pro (account.roon.app’s Welcome screen) but scrn returns as if i didnt enter my login info (no err mssg) .That maybe a different issue.

On cell, get “Waiting for your zroon Server”

What happens when you select “connect” shown in your screenshot?

Looks like the NUC is on version OS 259 Roon 1442. latest AFAIK is OS 261

What version are your remotes running? You can see it in your app store since you can’t get it to connect to the server yet. Maybe this is the issues?

Can you access the server webUI with it’s IP address? 192.168.68.51 according to your screen shot. Should be able to update it from there:

Off roon webUI, had [reinstall] os 3 days ago and just did again few mins ago… get same os ver 1.0 build 259 as before.
The nuc roon did cycle thru and restarted itself after reinstall os. Same os ver ver 1.0, build; 259, vserver sw same ver 2.0, build 1442.

Still cannit acess Roon Remote off ipad pro & cell phone appl… ver 2, build 1442 ( same as nuc roon rock server ver).

When i trued to download “Roon Remote” appl ver 2.0.01442 off apple store, gives only [open], which gives me roin login scrn. Again enter my acct, then refreshes scrn… no error mssgs, just repeats login scremn w blank email & pwd.

Again, Roon &:all other appls & wifi connection prefect, so what do you think happen to change the ips make my Roon non-accessable recently?

Thxs!

As for the update just noticed this note for the software release post:

** NOTE: This update is only applicable to ROCK devices created using RoonOS 1.0 Build 254 or later (released after 11/09/2022). ROCK installations prior to this date will not receive this update. However, there’s no need for concern if you have an older ROCK installation, as the update is specifically designed for newer hardware capabilities introduced in Build 254. All Nucleus Titan device will get this update.

As far as the IP addresses, I think it may be related to how your network was hooked up? It may have just been “reset/renewed” and then got borked? Were there any updates to any devices or did your ISP update the hardware on their end? Who knows?

When you hit “connect” on the phone screen what happens?
Might try re-installing the app? if it can’t connect?
Can you use one of the PCs to run try roon remote to see if it will work from there?

Hi again.
Seems Roon not providing me the the os update to build 261, so im stuck with build 259 unless roon sends me an .exe file. I do have to boot my nuc roon rock 2-3x as i often get Check Your Video Cable on attached monitor… so nice it this hdmi fix helps.

At any rate, cannot find any download for Roon Remote for a PC. Apparently Remote only for mobile devices-- ipads, iphone, android phones & tablets.

(Side note: I’ve disconnected my Netgear hub. As my NUC & rest of equipment are getting correct ip, don’t believe a Sonic modem will help)

Sorry… I’m bank to square one-- still no connection from Roon Remote to my NUC Roon Rock server.

I still dont understand why no problems for years and everything else in my network works fine except Roon.

Just a shot in the dark …
Could it be that you set up a VPN server on the router itself?
You can turn some routers into VPN servers to connect to your home network. That’s a built-in feature.

If you have a VPN router, all your devices will automatically be protected by the VPN, there is no need to install VPN clients on every device you own.
To check it this, log in to the router’s user interface, go to settings =>
Advanced > Advanced Setup > VPN Service.
Check whether Enable VPN Service setting was made.

That would explain the issue. Also the fact that Rock OS hasn’t been updated in ages.

Best VPN for Netgear Routers in 2024 Plus How to Install.

@Axel_Lesch Thanks for chiming in. I think we have his IP address issue sorted. As his server and remotes are all on the same 192.168.68 subnet now. Just need to figure out why the remotes are not connecting. Roon OS was just updated on July 17th to build 261, however It has a note that it is only to address newer hardware and specific date of ROCK installs.

@JamesW You would install Roon for windows and during install you choose to connect to an existing server.

Only vpn on two PC that normally dont connect to roon. No vpn on router.

As mentioned, only issue is Roon Remotes cant connect to Rock server even though Rock server listed on TP.Link master router connected page.

Just wondering, do u know if Roon WebUI [reset] Database & Settings wipe out all my roon fav/lists… like starting brand new? Of course i dont wish to do that as put alotof effort into my lists.

Otherwise we seem not to have a solution nor know why the connection suddenly failed. Being that Netgear hub assigned these ips out of my network is strange as Roon & all other apps were working for years wo issues.

Guess will need to try to reinstall Roon Rock from scratch…

Yes it will wipe out everything - as the Help article states:

  • Reset your Roon database and settings (warning: this is permanent, and will erase your Roon database)

It night be time to get Roon Tech Support to look at your server again. Now that the VPN is out of the loop. @benjamin could you have a look, please. I’m running out of ideas.

@JamesW
If the TP-Link hub/switch is unmanaged it would not assign IPs. But, if it was connected directly to the Sonic ONT then it was the Sonic ISP that assigned the IPs. An unmanaged hub/switch just splits the signal and passes data through with no modifications.

Have you already tried connecting the NUC and the PC directly to the Sonic ONT’s Ethernet ports via LAN cable? Just as a test to see if the Sonic has a DHCP server working. If a DHCP server is active, not at fault and the Ethernet port on the NUC is working properly, the NUC should receive an IP address that can be used to access the Rock’s Web UI from the PC, and then you would have to think further.

Hi. Sonic modem has only one port. I havent as connecting Nuc Roon to that one sonic modem port means i have no wifi and cannot of course plug both the Nuc and a pc into one port. The roon remote working with wifi would also be dead.

Also, the nuc roon ip is already within my network range for all the other working equip… except Roon Remote.

Thxs anyways.
