Roon scans continuously and has dropouts

This may be a permissions issue here. To verify, may I ask that you please try the following and then send us the output of the command:

  • Open the parent directory (ex: /Compilations/) in Terminal
  • Run this command: ls -l

Hey @ronfint,

I spoke with the team about the output of that command, and they’re hoping you can run another. In the output above you may notice that some of the permissions include the @ symbol, which means there are some additional attributes here.

For the same folder can you run this command: ls -al@

It should give us additional insight into what those additional attributes are, which should give us some more info about why you’re seeing this behavior. Once you run the command please paste the results here and I’ll pass it along.

Should I try removing all the files with the extended attributes com.apple.quarantine
and
com.apple.FinderInfo ?

I was thinking of doing that, examining the corresponding metadata, and then re-adding the files a few at a time.

Hey @ronfint,

I just had a chat with the team about this, and we are hoping that you could perform a test for us. The team is hoping to find out if the same behavior occurs with a brand new Roon database. Please see the instructions below:

  • First, create a backup of your database
  • Locate your Roon database according to these instructions
  • Rename the entire Roon (or RoonServer) folder to roon_old
  • Relaunch Roon, sign in, and configure a new install
  • Add your watched folders and confirm that everything syncs
  • If everything does sync, try adding an additional album and make sure that it is able to sync as well

Hi Dylan,

I’m in the process of doing this. Scanning my library will take 3 or 4 hours. I’ll be home until tomorrow noon, after which I’ll be away for about 10 days (and I don’t think my wife is interested in keeping up this conversation in my absence). So if this doesn’t work, I hope that we can pick this up in early August.

This did not work. After 5 plus hours of scanning, the circle is still spinning. If possible, I’d like to replace my Roon folder with the old one.

Yes, you can replace the new Roon folder with the new one. For now, if it’s okay, please keep the test Roon folder (you can rename it roon_test) in case the team would like to see logs from that test.

Thanks for your patience as the team has been investigating! The team has provided me some next steps here that I was hoping you could run for us. I know you’re out of town for a bit, so no rush here at all. We have another command for you to run that should give us even more information about what these special attributes are and why they may be causing you to experience this behavior.

  1. First, you’ll need to navigate one direction up (i.e. if you’re in Compilations folder in Terminal – use * cd …* command )
  2. Run xattr -rc Compilations/

Hello Dylan,

I went one direction up as directed (to /Volumes/Music), I ran the command, my NAS ground a bit, for a minute or so, but there was no output – as shown:

Hi Dylan,

Just wondering if you have any further suggestions. One thing that I should mention is that my album number has not been stable. By this I mean that any rescan is unlikely to turn up the exact number of albums as predicted by the previous number, although it’s usually epsilon for |epsilon|< 5.

Roon continues to scan.

Hey @ronfint,

I had a chat with the team about this, and we believe that we’ve managed to track down the behavior you’re experiencing to the following folders:

  • /Brad Mehldau/Live in Marciac
  • /Compilations/Masters of The Bow
  • /Paquito d'Rivera
  • /Peter, Paul and Mary
  • /Stefano di Battista

Can you please try moving these out of your watched folder (please do not delete them, just move them to another location on the NAS that isn’t being watched) and let me know if the behavior continues.

Hi Dylan,

Thanks very much! I removed these files and rescanned, and the scanning completed. I’ll add some other files later today and report.

I see the problem with these files. Each contains an alternate spelling involving capitalization. When I re-add these files, I’ll correct this. This means that I need to be more careful with metadata, especially when using dBpoweramp or similar. I think you put your finger on the problem.

Hi. Could you say a bit more about the alternate spelling issue? I have a Core that won’t stop analyzing, as well, and it happened after I re-organized some of the music folders to a more Roon-friendly layout.

Hi Bill,

Here are some examples: Stefano di Battista and Stefano Di Battista.
Peter, Paul and Mary and Peter, Paul And Mary. Every problem file had partners by the same artist but with a slightly differently capitalized spelling.

The lesson is to be very careful when importing new files to make sure that artist (etc?) matches what you have already.
