Title: Why the hell does Roon throttle Tidal High-Res by default? Check your settings.
I just found out Roon has been secretly choking my audio quality, and you need to check your setup immediately.
I pay for Tidal’s top-tier high-res subscription. I have 300 Mbps Wi-Fi. Yet, Roon was quietly serving me a Lossy signal path with a yellow dot.
Why? Because this overpriced, “premium” audiophile software defaults to a restricted bandwidth setting when you link your account. It literally hides the high-res audio you pay for behind a nested menu. Absolute joke.
If you don’t have a purple signal path, fix Roon’s terrible default behavior here:
Go to Settings > Services.
Click Edit next to Tidal.
Change Max Streaming Quality to Max.
Unbelievable that a software built for audio purists secretly defaults to compressing your music. Fix your app, Roon.
I think my Tidal settimg was per default on max. Maybe roon measured your downstream performance during installation.
Nevertheless, even if they would set the default setting like that, that’s not a big issue in my opinion.
Compare that to what Microsoft is doing with its users when they are e.g. trying to forcfully upgrading you to Windows 11. They ask you millions of times if you want to upgrade and they even try it without asking and if you deactivate the upgrade software then they reactivate that service with a windows update. THAT is annoying!
Roon help figured out the problem and they are making adjustments. The issue was that my Tidal subscription lapsed and then Tidal and Roon quality dropped to low, but when I reinstated Tidal, quality was stuck at low in Roon. They are changing this so it won’t happen in future.
