Roon server 2.66 compatibility issues with KEF LS50 and LSX (ref#A6H8NQ)

Same here KEF LS50 Wireless II.

DSD 64 tracks play fine. 128 or above crack/pop.

Mmh, in Roon I limiting the sources to 24/96, but over DLNA I can play also DSD256 without problems on the LSXII with firmware 3.0.135.

Surely my KEFs are connected with LAN and interconnection cable.

Replying to keep topic open. This is still an ongoing issue. I have a huge ripped SACD collection that now will not play on my KEF LS50 Wireless II, which is one of the primary reason I subscribe to Roon vs streaming alone. I can’t send any form of DSF files 64, 128, or 256 via Roon, DLNA works fine. When I try to use the sample conversion to resample DSF to PCM, no matter what frequency I choose there is distortion in the form of clicks and pops. Can anyone from Roon support comment?

Tech Support don’t monitor this forum category. I see that it has been reported in Support and this is an issue for KEF to resolve. Roon Labs are aware and will be in communication with KEF as necessary.

Thank you for your reply.

As I mentioned in the thread above, from my understanding, this is a technical issue KEF needs to sort out. And I also mentioned that for my two KEF speakers (LS60 Wireless and LSX II), I had opened tickets with KEF support accordingly. My aim for this post/thread was to understand better how widely spread the issue is and what it is exactly that does not work anymore. Also as an argumentation should KEF ever get back to me (which so far they have not). And to summarize the replies received to date:

  • The inability to stream DSD (in some cases 64, otherwise 128 or higher) properly via RAAT/Roon seems to affect everyone, so it’s not a phenomenon occuring with individual speakers only
  • Streaming via DLNA (which I dont’t use) seems not to be negatively affected, hence even under firmware 3.0 (or 4.1 for the LS50 Wireless II), the general ability of the speakers to play hi-res DSD is apparently not impaired
  • Hence, since the 3.0/4.0 release notes say “Roon library updated”, it might be that this is the root cause of the erratic behavior

If course, we have no way of knowing whether anyone from KEF follows this thread, but let’s hope they do.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the issue is on KEF’s side.

Since the latest firmware (4.1) my LS50 Wireless II not only suffer the issue reported by @Akio_Ito, they don’t even wake up properly when the TV turns on (via HDMI connection in this case, of course).

Previous firmware didn’t have this HDMI issue. I somehow fixed it by turning on the “Top panel lock” setting. It’s a workaround, obviously.

Oh, BTW after the firmware update I had even to reboot again the speakers (complete power unplugging included) in order to make them be recognized by the TV.

We got Qobuz Connect (+1) and they broke partially DSD and HDMI wake up (-2). Outcome: -1.

Having similar issues:

Kef LSX II

Latest firmware, speakers are wired in via Ethernet into powerline adaptors, Ethernet connection between the master and slave speaker.

  • Can’t get any DSD files to work, these were fine previously.
  • MQA files don’t work, tried tweaking the render settings in Roon and couldn’t get them to work. Again, never had any issues previously.
  • Standard files exhibit an annoying click or tearing sound, like a dirty vinyl record. Before these speakers were flawless.

LS50 Wireless II

Latest firmware, speakers are wired in via Ethernet into powerline adaptors, Ethernet connection between the master and slave speaker.

  • Can get DSD64 files to work, 128 or 256 stutter like hell like they can’t processed quickly enough. These were fine on Roon before and work perfectly fine when they’re sent to the speaker outside of Roon via Kef Connect and my NAS drive. When I tried a few more albums they crashed the speaker, with a “Audio device refuses to switch to Roon” message.
  • MQA files play with horrible distortion, tweaked settings and sometimes I can get them to play fine on Roon. But it’s hit and miss. These were previously fine. Playing MQA via Kef Connect and / Roon is perfectly fine.

So something is definitely going wrong. None of this is helped by Roon having terrible performance since the start of the year. Slowing down to a point nothing loaded in my library until a server restart. My setup is A Roon Rock on an Intel NUC. I’m guessing the latest Roon updates are compounding the ropey Kef update.

Hi @Chris_Gosling

If the latest Production release of Roon has not improved its performance, I suggest that you raise a support request to get Roon technical support to investigate your issue.

Describe the issue

KEF LS60 not playing DSD anymore following April 2026 firmware updates. Once attempt to play DSD and fail, all subsequent playback will fail with reason "Audio device refused to switch input to Roon."

Describe your network setup

KEF 60 connecting to router over LAN cable. Roon Server on Mac Mini is also connected to the same router over LAN.

The KEF manual says …

The KEF Connect App allows you to set up the speakers, apply sound settings, turn on/

off the speakers, switch sound sources …

… so try and see if it fixes you up.

Kindly take a look at this thread we have been running since two weeks now: KEF LS60 Wireless & LSX II not playing DSD/DXD anymore following April 2026 firmware updates . This is a malfunction of the new KEF firmware and is not related to your individual speakers. And it is primarily for KEF to solve, maybe with Roon’s support. On my running support tickets with KEF, KEF team has today (May 15) responded that the KEF software team is still investigating and that I shall be patient.

Hey @Vincent_Lam,

Thanks for taking the time to write in and share your report, and thank you for tagging your own thread around the issues @Akio_Ito :raising_hands:

Our team has reached out to KEF for further information, but we don’t yet have any news to share quite yet.

We’ll certainly keep you in the loop as we learn more, and thanks for your ongoing patience in the meantime.

Hello everyone,

We have just received an update from the team at KEF regarding this issue.

They have confirmed that their engineering team is actively investigating and working on a resolution. At this stage, KEF has requested that all affected users reach out and report the issue directly to their support team.

Reporting it directly to KEF ensures that your case is logged in their system, which will allow them to track the scope of the problem and follow up with you directly the moment a firmware update or fix is ready to be released.

Thank you all for your patience and for your detailed reports while KEF works to get this sorted out!

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I have KEF LS50 Wireless II speakers and have been enjoying roon for a few years up until a few months ago when I noticed DSD format is not playable anymore. I have contacted KEF support and they are unable to resolve this issue at this stage. I was wondering if I could receive any technical guidance to restore DSD playability. KEF firmware version is 4.1.

In May/June we ran a thread on issues with playback of hi-res DSD and DXD files via Roon/RAAT to KEF LS speakers (LS50 Wireless II, LS60 Wireless, and LSX II), following these speakers receiving firmware updates in April 2026 (4.1 for the LS50 Wireless II, and 3.0 for the LS60 Wireless and the LSX II).
This is the original thread: Roon server 2.66 compatibility issues with KEF LS50 and LSX (ref#A6H8NQ) . In the original thread, @vadim had also shared that he is in touch with KEF and that KEF is aware of the issues.

As the original topic had been closed by community moderators, I would like to share feedback received from KEF today in this new thread. KEF contacted me today with the offer to push new firmware updates to my speakers that don’t show on KEF’s website (Release Notes | KEF), yet, so I assume this is some beta testing stage.

I took them up on the offer, and after a bit of testing I can report that this is a major improvement and mostly solves the issue. To test, I streamed files in DSD256, DXD (352.8 kHz) 32 bit WAV, and DXD (352.8 kHz) 24 bit FLAC to both, my LS60 Wireless as well as my LSX II, via Roon/RAAT with no MUSE DSP engaged whatsoever, and all tracks played as they should.

The only niggle I still incurred is switching from Roon/RAAT to Qobuz Connect, where it needs a random number of switching inputs on the speakers (e.g. to “TV” and back to “WLAN”) or switching them off/on, or even switching outputs on the Qobuz app (local vs. Qobuz Connect vs. Google Cast) to get the speakers to play via Qobuz Connect. I reported this back to KEF for review. Switching back to Roon/RAAT did not present any issue.

The updated firmware release nos. are:

  • LS60 Wireless: device version 3.0.132.0xe040215 (previously: 3.0.131.0xbe9d0a8)
  • LSX II: device version 3.0.138.0x663ac63 (previously: 3.0.137.0xf884312)

Just wanted to share this rather positive news with everyone interested in the original post.

Excellent! I’m looking forward to the kef firmware update.

Thank you for sharing!
