Roon server online and ready but can't connect - looping; 10 minutes later connected now "poor connection"
Describe your network setup
asus rog phone 8 pro to orbi 6e wifi router to at&t fiber, or asus rog phone 8 pro to t-mobile 5g | orbi router to ethernet switch to qnap nas roon server | no issue in Roon on desktop client
Hi @Lance_Kowalski,
Thanks for reaching out to us for help with this issue. Does the trouble connecting to your server happen both outside your network and inside of it? If you only have trouble connecting when you’re outside your network then you can either manually port forward or use Tailscale to connect ARC to your server. If the trouble also occurs inside your home network then we will need to look at how your server is connecting to your router and we should also check your firewall settings to make sure Roon and it’s processes are allowed through.
It happens both ways. Whether I shut off wifi and use cellular or vice versa. These problems that I invariably have with both Roon and Roon ARC seems to plague me after a week or two of non-use. When I want to enjoy music after a week or two, whether from a laptop or mobile phone, I consistently run into these issues.
This most recent episode was giving me grief both on wifi and cellular for about 10 minutes, and then regardless of clearing cache, restarting the phone, it decided to start working again. If I recall, it may have been about the time I switched to Roon app on my phone (or very shortly thereafter) that it quit giving me these complaints when I switched back to Roon ARC.
I am not familiar with Tailscale, but the issue is not only when outside of my network. As for door #2, the issue was not impacting my desktop machine which is also using wifi.
If I can use Roon ARC consistently for a good while once it stops giving me grief, would that still be a firewall related issue? Is a “sometimes” firewall issue possible?
Since you’re having issues with both Arc and Roon, the issue could very well be between your Server and network connection.
As a next test, please simply your network chain and remove any switches temporarily. Get a direct ethernet connection from your server to your router. If you run into another connection failure, take note of the specific date, time, and if applicable, name of track playing at the time of the disconnect.
From there, we’ll enable advanced diagnostics to review your Roon Server logs to take a closer look at what might be happening behind the scenes.
