Describe the issue

Hi. My Roon server is installed on Windows 11 and is working fine so I can play music from the device the server is installed on but my Roon players installed on iPad and android phone are unable to find the Roon server. Arc also does not work. I also get an error message on Roon server saying that my last.fm credentials are incorrect (I have never had a last.fm account). If I close Roon server down and relaunch it works again for a while until the last.fm message appears, at which point it seems to stop working.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Describe your network setup

Windows 11, Vodafone router connected via wifi

Hello @zanimos

Thank you for the detail. Let us take the two things separately, because we do not think they are the same problem, and the connection one is the important one.

First, one thing to confirm, because it is the most likely explanation. On the form you told us the Roon Server is connected by Wi-Fi. Please double check that. If the Windows PC is actually plugged into the router with a cable while the iPad and the phone are on Wi-Fi, then the split between wired and wireless is where we would look first. Some routers, and any additional access point, extender or powerline adapter in the chain, keep those two sides on separate networks, and devices on one cannot then see devices on the other.

So please tell us:

  • Is the Windows PC on Ethernet cable or on Wi-Fi?
  • Is there anything besides the Vodafone router providing Wi-Fi, such as an extender, a booster, a second router or a powerline adapter?

Then please check the addresses on all three devices and post them here. This settles it either way:

  • Windows: press Windows and R together, type cmd, press Enter, type ipconfig and press Enter. Please give us the IPv4 Address.
  • iPad: Settings, then Wi-Fi, then tap the small i beside the network name. Please give us the IP Address.
  • Android phone: Settings, then Network and internet, then Wi-Fi, then tap the connected network. Please give us the IP address.

The first three groups of numbers must match on all three, for example 192.168.1.x. If the PC differs from the other two, we have our answer.

Two more things worth checking on the Windows machine while you are there:

  1. Open Settings, then Network & Internet, and make sure the profile for the connection it is using is set to Private rather than Public. On Public, Windows blocks the discovery Roon needs.
  2. In ipconfig, please tell us whether more than one adapter shows an address. Both Ethernet and Wi-Fi being active at once, or a VPN, or Hyper-V, will stop remotes finding the server even when everything else looks correct.

Second, the Last.fm message. You have never had a

account, so something has a

connection saved on one of your Roon profiles, and Roon keeps trying to validate credentials that cannot work.

Please go to Settings, then Services, find

, and disconnect or sign out of it. That should stop the message. We do not expect it to fix the connection problem, but it takes it out of the picture so we can see whether the two are related after all. Please tell us whether anything changes once it is gone.

Hi,

Many thanks for getting back to me.

I did an additional router reset and it worked for a day or so but the same issues have now reoccurred.

Windows PC is WiFi only, no Ethernet connection. No additional boosters etc.

Windows ipv4 address - 192.168.1.3

iPad - 192.168.1.4

Android - 192.168.1.5

Network was set to public so have set to private

In ipconfig the only connection showing is wireless lan adapter WiFi. All other adapters are disconnected. No other information.

Having made those changes I rebooted my pc and on launching Roon a windows message came up asking if I wanted to allow public and private networks to access the app.

The blue tick box option for private I left ticked but public was greyed out with a tick (so I couldn’t change)

I then got a message saying windows firewall has blocked some features of raatserver. I selected allow.

It now seems to be working.

Is there anything else I should do or submit a new ticket if the problem returns?

Many thanks

I think I have managed to disconnect from last.fm (it wasn’t previously giving me that option).

Thanks again.

Hello @zanimos

Good result, and the cause was the network profile. On Public, Windows blocks the discovery that remotes and Roon ARC depend on, which is exactly why the PC could play music by itself while the iPad and the phone could not find it. Setting the profile to Private and letting RAATServer through the firewall is what was needed. Your addresses confirm the rest was fine: all three devices on 192.168.1.x, one active adapter, nothing else in the chain.

Nothing further to do.

One thing worth knowing in case it returns. Windows sometimes resets that profile back to Public when it re-identifies a network, which can happen after a router reboot. That would also explain why your earlier resets helped for a day or so. So if the remotes disappear again, check Settings, then Network & Internet, and confirm the profile is still Private before anything else.

If it does come back, please reply here. If the thread has closed by then, please open a new one with a link to this one so whoever picks it up has the history.

Thanks Vadim

Unfortunately Roon Arc is still not working. I forgot to check previously.

On Arc it says there’s an issue with my server and to check settings for more details. In the settings on my server it says everything is fine - Ready and can securely access your Roon server.

Thanks again

Ok I just had to disconnect and then reconnect. Working now.

Thanks.
