Roon Server frequent disconnections (ref#0H7K40)

Hi @BergeP,

Thanks for the follow-up! Just for future reference, our team doesn’t work weekends - thanks for your patience!

This would make sense - you aren’t suffering from any hardware-related corruption tied to the Nucleus, logs indicated issues with the drive you were using to host your database backups. Specifically, the manifest file on the drive - we’re seeing the same error earlier today:

Trace: [Broker:Misc] [backup] [backup getrestoreitems, manifestdir: AttachedDir:/roon/sys/storage/mounts/ROCK_Kingston_DataTraveler_3_0_E0D55E6CE281E491D90FA39B_CE8E-55EA-p1/RoonBackups/

To confirm, are you attempting to save a fresh backup to this new drive, and then attempting to restore from this saved backup?

Or, are you making a copy of an older backup>transferring>and then attempting to restore?

Until we can stabilize your server database, we won’t be able to pin down potential causes for disconnections.

If your oldest backup is still failing to restore even from a completely different drive, it might mean that starting fresh with a new database is the best path forward—though I know that’s not the ideal solution. Let me know how you’d like to proceed, and I’m happy to help however I can!

@benjamin, the backup source I’m using is from my last backups from Roon ROCK. The one from Mars 5th was a forced backup and went all smooth. The last one was from the night after and was a scheduled one. This also went smooth with no warning or bad behavior. Very strange that something suddenly is going wrong just plugging it in to N1.
Yes I bought a new memory stick for trying out but then N1 could not find the backup source. I have read some other posts that others also have trouble with the backup on N1. It could be a SW problem from your end.
Starting all over with grooming and loving care of my collection is not a very tempting task.
Sorry for my impatience. Hope you had a great weekend

Hello @BergeP ,

The current theory here is that the USB drive itself is starting to experience hardware issues. We have sometimes seen this surrounding old/failing USB drives, even if the backup appears to complete as expected.

How was the new memory stick formatted? If it was formatted as NTFS (Windows default) or MacOS Journaled, please note that this file system type is not suitable for Nucleus and might be causing access issues. It is best to use exFAT for Nucleus compatibility, you can format the drive from your PC.

@noris , the easy way didn’t work out for me so I walked the plank and started from scratch with a new server. So far so good. I’m in the end zone when it comes to audio analysis so when that is over I will try a backup. Yes the new USB stick is exFAT. Hope everything works out well so I can start enjoying my system again. I have also made a backup path to iCloud via my MacBook. Do the computer need to be running with screen open or can it sleep under the backup prosess? If the backup to the USB stick fails I let you know. Thx for helping out so far

Hey @BergeP,

Glad to hear things are functioning properly so far!

Can you explain this a bit more? Are you referring to using a network connection from Roon to a location on the Mac?

If you’re referring to using Time Machine as a way to create Roon backups, this isn’t advised.

Because the Roon database is frequently being updated in the background with new metadata, cover art, artist information, and more, backing up your “live” Roon database using external programs can result in corrupt backups. We strongly recommend against using Time Machine, Crashplan, Backblaze, or other backup applications to backup your “live” Roon database. If you would like to use any of these applications to back up Roon, set up a Scheduled Backup and tell your backup program to backup the RoonBackups folder.

@benjamin , no I’m not using Time Machine. I have made a folder in iCloud Drive, looked at another post where it was explained by the Mothership, file sharing and…… I think it has worked out. Thought it would be good to have a backup of the backup. It also seems that the new stick is working too.
So now I’m in grooming mode.
Thx for all help.
Roon for life and have a great day.
PS. Are you able to see if my backups went through?

This is what I did…

Fantastic @BergeP - excellent work!

We should be able to see a successful backup on our end. Feel free to share a more specific date and time and we’ll request a fresh diagnostic report!

Happy listening :notes: :drum:
