Roon server not recognizing Sonos devices properly

I’m new to Roon, and I’m having issues with using Sonos. I have several Sonos devices that I use around the house in addition to a Roon Ready device I use in my main listening room.

I have the latest Sonos Amp in the family room, but Roon shows it as a WiiM Amp via Airplay2 in the Roon Tested list of devices. However, it will not play.

Roon tested does see my Play Five as an AirPlay2 device.

All my Sonos devices show in Other devices as Sonos Streaming. I have:

Play Five
Play One - individual and a stereo pair. Stereo pair show up individually.
Port
Move (gen1)
Amp
Arc

Is there an updated list of support, or is it still limited to the older models which are no longer supported by Sonos.

There is a separate issue I’m seeing with Sonos Streaming, so I was hoping to use AirPlay. See Intel NUC overheating and fan noise since latest Roon update (ref#HMNFG1)

I’m sorry that you’re in this situation. I’ve used to have an old 1st gen Play 5, and one other. Both having problem playing Roon like random drop or stop playing. So ended up switching to Wiim and have never look back.

They are all supported, just because they don’t show as Roon tested with artwork doesn’t mean they are not supported. To get that, the device manufacturers need to want it and send in devices for testing. My ARC works fine without this.

Show a list of your devices Roon is seeing. All Sonos should show up as Sonos Streaming and AirPlay devices, any device with multiple ways to play to will also show up more than once.

Do you have a Wiim in your home I can’t see any reason Roon would confuse this with a Sonos Amp they all have unique ids.

Devices not showing up generally means discovery issues which are most likely network related. Do you use a mesh system for WiFi?

Yeah, I see that now. I mistook seeing the stereo pair Sonos Ones as individual, but now I see the IP is the same, and one is AirPlay and the other is Sonos Streaming.

I do have a WiiM Pro in the house in my main system. It is really odd that roon sees my Sonos Amp (latest one) as a WiiM Amp. I can ignore this for now.

That leads me back to the problem that brought me here. It seems Sonos Streaming is not working right for a lot of us. If I play with Sonos Streaming for any length of time, my CPU will jump to 100%, fans will come on, and it will go like that for hours until I reboot roon. How are you estabishing its seeing it as Wiim? I can’t see this being possible. Please show a screen grab of your devices in Roon. What’s the ip of the Sonos Amp and the Wiim?

I’ll try and see if I can replicate your behaviour with my ARC when I get in that room.

The Family Room device most definitely is not a WiiM Amp. It is a Sonos Amp (latest gen). The IP given is the IP of my Sonos Amp. I don’t own a WiiM Amp – not yet anyway, but I’m thinking of adding one in my office. Therefore, this looks to me like roon is not properly identifying my Sonos Amp.

Down in Other Network Devices, the Amp is shown as a Sonos device.

That is very strange, each device has its own id as to what it is so this should not happen. You definitely not changed it manually to try and identify it? What happens if you load defaults using the text shown to the right below?

Nothing changes if I hit Load defaults.

One for support that one then. I would raise another ticket for it.

If it’s seeing it as device you don’t get options to change it, only unidentified devices have that option. So if it’s been manually changed to be the Wiim Amp which it looks like it has been, you can reset it normally by hitting set defaults but that seems to be broken. So that’s another bug. Just changed my JBl to be a Wiim amp and now can’t set it back. :person_facepalming:

As gen2 Sonos amp isn’t a recognised device he can’t choose it anyway and if you use S1 it may not work as it doesn’t now as a Wiim.
