· Used to run on NUC windows 10, but can't upgrade to Win 11. Wanted to try and Linux installation. Was too unstable, required reboots and tinkering. I think is was Ubuntu 20.4
You could try DietPi, it’s a small, simplified Linux distribution and ready to install Roon Server on (there is a button for it). Search for DietPi on the forum here and you will find lots of information.
Of course, if you want even simpler, just install Roon ROCK.
Otherwise, install the OS you are comfortable with, and this can be Windows
True, but 20.04 was an LTS, too, and there is no inherent reason for it to be unstable and requiring frequent reboots and tinkering, so maybe it’s just not the best choice for the OP.
Unless maybe if 20.04 was installed recently, after it being EOL, but this would be a weird thing to do. Who knows, maybe it wasn’t 20.04 to begin with.
IIRC was 20.04 unstable network wise because of the new network manager. IDK if it ever got fixed. I think the community here ended up recommending the update to 22.04 to resolve the issues with 20.04.
I ran it back then and can’t say it was, certainly not with Ethernet as a Roon Server should be used. (Though I used it with WiFi and an Intel card, it was fine but other WiFi chipsets may have been worse).
Anyway, yeah, definitely the current 26.04 LTS is a better option if going Ubuntu.
To add some context to your Linux experience, as of our latest release, Roon Server on Linux has updated minimum requirements: it specifically requires glibc 2.27 or later, alongside OpenSSL 1.1.1 or later.
While a fully updated installation of Ubuntu 20.04 natively meets these requirements, it is possible your system had older or broken dependencies, or you ran into the network manager issues mentioned by other users, which could explain the instability and need for constant reboots.
If you would like to give your current Ubuntu installation one last check, you can verify your system versions by running the following commands in your terminal:
ldd --version
openssl version
Please share the output here if you’d like us to take a look.
However, since you specifically mentioned wanting an installation that doesn’t require constant tinkering, we strongly agree with Suedkiez: migrating your Intel i5 NUC to Roon Optimized Core Kit (ROCK) is the best path forward.
ROCK is our custom, lightweight Linux-based operating system designed exclusively for Roon Server. It turns your NUC into a dedicated, set-and-forget appliance that updates automatically through the Roon app, removing the need for any OS-level maintenance.
Let us know if you would like the instructions for migrating your database and installing ROCK, or if you’d prefer to troubleshoot the Ubuntu dependencies!
