Description of Issue
I’ve been trying to resolve this on my own for a few months now, but realizing it might not be me. I have rebuilt my database, twice. Each time it takes forever, easily a couple of weeks. I have restarted software, rebooted and power cycled the Nucleus. I don’t do anything but check progress while the database is rebuilding.
When I do anything on Roon, it takes forever. I’ve seen some threads here talking about 10-20 sec delays — this is 10-20min at best. Sometimes music will start playing on a device, and I’ll be startled because I had tried playing something 30min earlier. If a track finally plays, it’s often one and done.
Any suggestions? I’m at the point where I haven’t been using the Nucleus for a few months and am ready to look at other options.
How are your files and folders structured? There was a recent discussion (or two IIRC) with in one case all files dumped into a single folder IIRC and in another case very high numbers of subfolders in a folder, and in both cases performance suffered severely. And while a Nucleus+ should probably handle 200K+ tracks and more, maybe it doesn’t with specific structures.
Sounds like you are not an outlier, then, and that’s probably not the cause. In the one case there were hundreds of subfolders in a folder, I think (live show collection per year or something like that), and in the other all tracks in a single folder. Apparently both is bad for performance, but you don’t seem to have that.
Probably a case for Roon staff to pull logs from your machine
So sorry for the delay here! A first review of your Nucleus diagnostics doesn’t point to anything obvious quite yet. Are you able to send over a screenshot of the webUI of your Nucleus?
Here is more info on this:
When you did this, did you start from scratch, or did you restore from a backup?
Where do you primarily store your local library? If you disable your watched folders, does that affect performance?
For rebuilding database, i did this from scratch twice — having it import the library and identify tracks. This took weeks. My local library is all on the Nucelus+.
Not sure if I’m watching any folders but will check and disable.
Thanks for the update. If possible, could you note a specific date and time when you experience slowness? Your core diagnostics didn’t show us any indication of hardware errors, but it would be good to get a timestamp to investigate further.
May 2 - 7:23am - navigated to home, saw Roon spinner as it was loading my home page
May 2 - 7:23am - pressed play on the last track that had been played on the remote
May 2 - 7:25am - home finally populated with content
May 2 - 7:27am - track plays
I do see that Roon is adding about 20K tracks to my library, no idea what this is since I’ve basically stopped using Roon due to these issues. My guess is it’s re-performing the last library update I did? I would have thought this happened days/weeks ago
Right around the time you provided, I’m seeing Roon having trouble identifying a large amount of tracks it’s trying to analyze. Can you provide more information about where these 20k tracks reside?
How are they set up in your Roon settings>Storage? If you disable your watched folder containing these tracks, does performance still seem slow?
With that, I also see your MacBook airplay device temporarily expiring around the time you press play, but I don’t think this is related to slow performance.
I would also temporarily turn off audio + background analysis via Roon settings>Library.
these tracks are all in the Nucleus storage HDD. They’re in the Storage > Internal Storage > Media path, and exist primarily in a “artist > album > track >” folder structure. No annoying subfolders or nested folders for the most part
We’re still investigating potential causes internally. While we do this, I would take a closer look into your local library, and test out re-adding small subsections of your library and test performance. When you hit a snag, take note of the date and time, as well as recently added albums, and share that information here.
I’d also make sure to hardwire your core directly to your router, bypassing any network gear, in the meantime.
This information will be helpful while we continue to investigate. Thank you!
Still trying to unwatch that folder, but not getting any options to do so — likely because Roon is acting soooo slow. Will try to circumvent the switch, but that’s not a longterm solution. Switch and all ports and cables seem to be working well, I’d have bigger problems if that wasn’t the case
Thanks for giving that a try @Noah_Lopez. We’ve recently released a fix that you may find helpful, but it’s currently running on our early access build, and won’t be out on our production build until next week.
If you have an interest in testing out early access, you can learn more about that here:
Outside of that, you could test out adding your watched folders back one by one, and test performance until you hit a snag. I’ll be curious to see how things run after we released the next production build next week.
I took a month off from even trying to deal with Roon. I was hopeful that a software update would bring things back to life, but see it’s just as bad as before. Noting all the ARC tickets that are clogging support, I’m guessing these are a low priority? Really disappointed with my unusable library!
Sorry to hear you’re still having performance issues on your Nucleus. It does seem to be library related, were you able to give my last suggestion a try?
Tedious no doubt, but might help determine where in your library the issue may be. Let me know, thanks!
