Roon server on Mac desktop not starting; iPad remote waiting for server (ref#OMTHBG)

Is Roon Server running?

· No, Roon Server is not running.

For Roon connectivity to work properly, both Roon Server and Roon Remote need to be turned on.

· I can't turn on Roon Server, I need help.

Describe the issue

Roon server on Mac desktop will not start. IPad which I use as remote also selected Roon but it indicates waiting for Roon server.

Describe your network setup

My Mac desktop is connected to my Wi Fi which is on a fiberoptic network.

Hi @alanferris45,

Thanks for reaching out to us to ask about this issue. Can you please give us a bit more detail about what’s going on with Roon Server? What step are you getting stuck on? If you’re seeing any error messages or unusual screens, a screenshot would be really helpful for troubleshooting.

I get the instruction to launch the Roon server. When I execute that launch the screen indicates an attempt to execute and ultimately reverts back to that original instruction.

Hi @alanferris45,

It sounds like you may be running into a login loop. Roon’s sign-in process relies on a web browser opening automatically, and it seems like that may not be happening in your case.

One common cause is a browser setting on your iPad that blocks pop-ups. Could you please check if that might be the case?

If that doesn’t seem to be the issue, it would be very helpful if you could share a screen recording of what you’re seeing during the login attempt. That should help us better understand what’s going wrong.

Think my problem more basic than that, I don’t even get to a sign-in screen. I’ve deleted and reloaded the Roon app several times on my desktop and still have the same issue. Thanks, Alan

Hey @alanferris45,

To confirm, you’re attempting to start Roon Server on your mac, but it’s failing to do so - you don’t see the Roon Jellyfish on the upper right hand task bar of your mac? Like so:

Do you have a recently saved backup? It looks like your version of Roon and Roon Server are a bit out of date - so refreshing your database may very likely get you back up and running. This essentially installs a completely fresh version of Roon, and so you’d then need to restore from one of your available backups to load all your previous settings and library.

Don’t proceed unless you’re able to perform a database restore:

 • Ensure you have a recently available backup ready
 • Exit out of Roon + RoonServer (from taskbar area)
 • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
 • Find the folder that says “Roon Server” and “Roon”
 • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old” and “Roon” to “Roon_old”
 • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
 • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Here is the process outlined from a macOS machine:
roonoldmac

Let me know if the above helps and if you have any issues along the way! :raising_hands:

If I click on the Roon “Jellyfish” in the task bar I get nothing but the rotating color circle. Again going back to try to open Roon from the icon I get an option to click on open Roon Server. This will run the “Jellyfish” for a while and then revert back to the open server option. When we returned from a couple week vacation a few weeks ago Roon was continuously running (and would not stop) a Snap Backup, or something to that effect. Hopefullly this information helps. Thanks Alan

Hello @alanferris45 ,

Have you been able to use the instructions @benjamin provided to reinstall Roon Server on your Mac? I was able to activate diagnostics for your account but I don’t see any errors related to the startup. If you have a backup, please try the reinstall and then restore from backup. Let us know how this goes!

I did go to Benjamin’s instructions. In finder doing a search for Roon and "Roon Server I came up with 10 documents entitled Roon Backup 2 only. Also be advised that I do have a cloud backup that runs every day (I Drive) from which hopefully I could retrieve the Roon data backup. I am not especially computer literate so I am sure that is a handicap.

Alan

Hello @alanferris45,

Thank you for the update.

It’s great to hear that you have daily cloud backups—we should be able to restore from those if needed.

I do have a cloud backup that runs every day (I Drive) from which hopefully I could retrieve the Roon data backup
In Finder, doing a search for Roon and “Roon Server” I came up with 10 documents entitled “Roon Backup 2” only

Can you please confirm whether you were able to find the actual Roon or RoonServer folders, or not at all?

If we do have a valid backup, we can safely proceed with reinstalling Roon:

 1. Click the Roon icon in the menu bar (near the clock) and select Exit Roon Server.
 2. Open Finder → Applications, then move Roon to the Trash.
 3. Download the latest version of Roon from this link.
 4. Launch Roon and complete the login process.
 5. If prompted, restore your database from the backup.

Let me know what you find, and we’ll go from there.

I went to finder and deleted everything that referenced Roon. I then went to your link (which in fact does show my account with the option of logging out) and downloaded the app. Before when I went to the icon in the menu bar I just got the rotating color circle with no way to access anything on that app but now I got the option to open Roon. When I clicked on that the app showed movement but would not open and I got the message “Fatal Error (Could not create required lock file)”. Now that message keeps popping up every few seconds. Alan

Hey @alanferris45,

Thanks for the follow up! Sorry to hear your issues persist.

As a next step:

Open Terminal.app on your mac

Type the following commands and hit enter after each command:

 • cd /tmp
 • sudo chown $(whoami) /tmp You may be asked to enter your Mac password after that last command.
After that, open Roon again and see if you’re able to access things normally. Thank you! 🙏

Thanks, I was able to complete all the steps and then password was requested but I could type nothing in. There was a shaded key symbol that I could not delete or type over. Alan

It is normal that there is no typing feedback. The terminal does not even print asterisks because they give away the length of the password, which can be considered a security risk.

Just type the password and press Enter.

Thanks for the clarification. I executed the instructions and Roon still would not open as described in my prior texts. Is there any way I can cancel Roon and get a refund? I love the application when it works but haven’t been able to use for the past several months. Thanks, Alan

Hi @alanferris45,
I’ve sent you a private message regarding your refund request.

Just to confirm, should we assume you no longer wish to continue troubleshooting? Let us know and we’ll either close this thread or provide next steps, depending on how you’d like to proceed.

Thanks for sticking with us @alanferris45!

When we review your account admin, we can see an instance of Roon Server on your Mac, but it’s still showing as an older version - (build 1413) with the latest build being (build 1544).

As an easy next step - can you test out temporarily disabling your macOS firewall, and try to open Roon? It may help to disable>reboot your mac> attempt to open Roon.

Based on your admin account, it doesn’t look like Roon was fully remove and reinstalled, which is odd. Let’s give that another try - I’ll list out the steps below. Be sure to keep any Roon Backups as previously mentioned.
 1. Quit all instances of Roon

 2. Delete the Roon applications - Go to /Applications and drag the application into the trash > empty it.

 1. Remove all Roon data folders:
These hold the actual database, settings, cache, logs, etc.

Open Finder, then press Cmd + Shift + G to open Go to Folder, and enter:

~/Library

From there, delete the following folders (if they exist):

 • ~/Library/Roon/
 • ~/Library/RoonServer/
 • ~/Library/RAATServer/
 • ~/Library/Logs/Roon/
 • ~/Library/Logs/RoonServer/
 • ~/Library/Preferences/com.roon.Roon.plist
 • ~/Library/Preferences/com.roon.RoonServer.plist
 • ~/Library/Caches/com.roon.Roon/
 • ~/Library/Caches/com.roon.RoonServer/
You can then use Spotlight search in Finder (⌘ + Space) to search for “Roon” and double-check for any missed folders or files.Everyting except your Roon backups 🙂
 1. Empty Trash & Restart - Move all Roon files to Trash and Empty the Trash. Then Restart your Mac (this clears temp caches and file handles)
 1. Then try downloading and installing Roon one last time: https://roon.app/en/downloads

Let me know if this allows you proper access. Thanks again for your time and patience Alan! :folded_hands:

When I typed in the lengthy address to download Roon it simply took me to website where I could download free trial which I did and the app now works. Can we now just the free trial to my subscription and allow me a few months extension for the time I’ve not been able to access the application? Thanks Alan
