Roon Server on MacBook Pro crashes with 'Trouble loading library' (ref#S7A1JJ)

What’s happening?

· I am experiencing freezes or crashes

Describe the issue

I setup my ROON server on a Macbook Pro. I also have iTunes loaded (one of the great attractions to ROON was the ability to access albums from my Music). Everything has been working great but recently I got a "Trouble loading library" and ROON would crash. I did go to help center and follow the directions on changing ROON server to ROON server_old. It would not let me restore from another library, no matter how many times I exited ROON and restarted (very frustrating). Now it asks me if I would like to setup ROON on this Macbook and takes me to the ROON login screen, then back to "would you like". Need help please. Really enjoy ROON/Tidal. Running PS Audio Airlens and PS Audio MkII DAC. Has been running great until this library issue.

Hi @gccooper56,

Thank you for your post.

Our diagnostic servers indicate that you’re running an older build of Roon, build 1365. Is there a reason you haven’t updated to the most recent Roon build across your Roon environment?

Just to confirm I’ve interpreted your post correctly: when you attempt to restore from a Backup after testing your RoonServer by deleting/renaming the RoonServer folder itself, you encounter a “Trouble Loading Library” error within the Roon UI itself? Please share a screenshot of the error you’re encountering when attempting to restore a Backup.

Are there any older Backups from which you can restore?

Do you have any issues loading this same local library via iTunes itself?

Have you made any changes to the Apple Music library or its subdirectory folders that would have affected the XML file you used to import this library to Roon? Please verify you followed the procedure here.

We’ll need a set of manual log files from your RoonServer folder to further diagnose this issue. If you can locate these within the RoonServer_old folder you created, that’s even more desirable, as that would illuminate the cause of the issue in the original DB.

You can use use the directions found here to locate your RoonServer/_old folder again and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader. Thank you!

Hi Conner,
In addition to the above info, when I did get to the Roon Home Screen and went to settings,… it looked like it was trying to do a version update (the bars got to about 80%) and then it would kick me out again. Did this 3 or 4 different times and took me to Trouble loading library/restore from another backup.
Tried to attach screenshot. hope it works
THX!

Hi Connor,
First, no problems loading iTunes library just to use on Macbook Pro. Can listen to music thru Mac. No changes made to my iTunes at all. No additions. Here is what i am experiencing as of now:

  • Roon loads (verify box loads successfully)
  • Roon asks me If I want to setup Roon Server on this Macbook or another device. I select as normal this Macbook.
  • Roon then goes to the "Ready to Connect " this Macbook. I select and Roon starts to load and then it takes me back to original login to Roon account.
  • It will also say “Trouble loading library” restore from backup. It directs me to a restore sceen which I have a screenshot of but can’t figure out how to send it to you.
  • Is there a way we can talk person to person?
    This is a bit frustrating.
    Appreciate your help

Hey @gccooper56,

Thanks for the update!

As a next step, lets see if clearing your database cache may help -

  • Exit out of Roon
  • Find and open your Roon database
  • Navigate to /Library/Roon/Cache
  • Move the contents of the /Cache folder elsewhere, like your desktop
  • Try restarting Roon and verify if the issue still occurs

Thanks! :+1:

Hi Benjamin,
Thanks for all your help. I really do appreciate and look forward to getting my ROON server back up and running. I did do the -old cache move to the desktop. I rebooted and thought we might have a “winner”, however, once it asked me to setup ROON server on this MAC and went to connect screen (and it actually went in to have me sign in to Tidal, Oubuz,…etc. The load hesitated and then gave me the “trouble loading library” message again. I then rebooted and then I got another Fatal Error message. I hope to add the screenshot on this email.

I went to the _old log folder and tried to compress and send to you but I am “out of space” on Macbook drive. I then tried to offload pics onto a thumb drive to makeup space but to no avail.
QUESTION:
I have a 2 TB SSD that I have a copy of my iTunes library on. I am sure I have added more since I did this backup, however, can I offload my entire local iTunes onto this drive? Could this be the reason for the trouble loading message?

If I offload the iTunes library onto my SSD drive, then can I access this drive from ROON server? How woudl I do that?

Another option is to go see a Mac specialist to help me clear up space so I can have access to local iTunes. I may do both.

Hi @gccooper56,

You should be able to. I found this article from Apple Move your iTunes library to another computer - Apple Support. I know this link is for Windows but it should also be possible on MacOS.

There are a two ways to do this. You can physically connect the drive to the Roon server or you can connect it to a different computer and share the desired folder on your network. Connecting the drive physically is likely the easiest option.
