· The Nucleus boots up and I can connect to it in the Roon app without issue, but I have a question about configuration/storage/attached devices
Describe the issue
I have a new Nucleus one. All software is upto date as far as I'm aware. The issue I have is that the Roon server occasionally restarts by itself. I have not been able to identify if there is a particular action that causes the restart, but it does seem to happen when I do something other than just listening - for example adding a tag to a Qobuz favourite. Of course if it is restarting when I’m not listening to it I wouldn’t know about it !
Music files are on on a Synology NAS. Backups are made to the NAS and also to a USB attached portable drive. Background work happens in the middle of the night. However the restarts happen outside of the scheduled backup times and background work times. Background audio analysis is unscheduled and throttled. All network connections (apart from endpoints) are wired.
An unexpected restart on a Nucleus One is not something we want to see, and the fact that it seems tied to normal interaction makes this worth narrowing down.
To get a clearer picture, we’ll need two things from you: what the front LED does when the restart happens, and whether there are any USB devices attached besides the backup drive, such as a DAC, display, or dongle. If you can also tell us whether the Nucleus is wired directly to your router or through a switch, that would help us rule out a network-related trigger.
We’d also like to review logs around one of the restart events. We can enable diagnostics on your account, then the next time it happens, please note the exact local time, date, and what you were doing at the moment, and send that back here so we can check the surrounding activity.
If anything changed around the time this started, like a power event, new peripheral, or a move in the setup, mention that too.
Thanks for the reply. It has happened just now, 0935 BST.
All I did to trigger this was open the Roon app on a windows PC and tried to navigate to the album page using the back button. Previously it has happened using an ipad and a windows tablet with a variety of actions.
There is no front LED I can see on the Nucleus One; the rear one remained on. The web interface (see below) suggests it’s only Roon restarting, not Roon OS.
There are no other USB attached devices, only the SSD. It is wired into the network using a TP link switch.
It’s been happening occasionally since I bought this at the beginning of May. I can’t say whether the frequency of the event has changed over that time or not.
Thank you - that detail is very helpful. No front LED and only Roon restarting (not the OS) confirms this is a Roon Server process crash rather than a hardware or power issue.
We have reviewed the diagnostic logs and identified the cause. There is a known memory management issue affecting the Nucleus One that can trigger a restart during UI-heavy actions like navigating album pages or pressing back - exactly what you described. Our engineering team is already aware of this and it is expected to be addressed in an upcoming release.
In the meantime, a daily restart of Roon Server can help reduce the frequency of these restarts by clearing memory regularly.
If the issue persists after the next release, please reply here, and we will take another look.
There are some memory and performance improvements undergoing testing in the Early Access category if you wanted to migrate your server and remotes over to the test branch.
Here are instructions you can use for migration to EA:
No problem at all, take your time. When you are ready to try again next week, feel free to open a separate ticket for the SMB access issue and we will help you get it sorted. Looking forward to hearing how the EA build performs once you are on it!
Thanks for giving Early Access a try. If you see any more unplanned restarts, let us know (preferably in the Early Access category), and we’ll continue investigating the behavior.
